What Causes Soft Yellowish Stool, Mild Fever And Nausea?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: I've been having yellowish stools since Thursday. Everyday. Not diarrhea. Solid but soft. Today I have a mild fever- 99.2. I have been on nystatin and high dose of probiotics for potential candidiasis for almost 4 weeks. Dr ran a ton of tests, but I don't see him until Thursday. I don't have abdominal pain but feel nauseous and my head is foggy. I have had IBS for years- not as bad as it was 4/5 yrs ago, but very few regular stools- mostly diarrhea and or constipation. Don't empty my colon every time. I just don't know what is going on. Everything was normal (my normal) until thurs. I basically stopped drinking wine over 6 weeks ago- but this past week, had several glasses on mon and then on Friday and the ea time felt horrible the nxt day. I've never had that bad of hangover in the past unless I really had a lot to drink. It's very strange.

Brief Answer:
Body's metabolism may vary for ingested food/drink

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Body perform's metabolism of ingested material in a specific manner. Wine/drink is metabolized in liver. Some times body takes more time to metabolize wine. As a result hangover is prolonged. There could be a number of causes for "yellow stool". I would be in a better position to guide you anything if you answer following questions please:

1. How good is your appetite now a days?
2. have you or any family member observed yellow discoloration of your eyes or on body skin?
3. Do you feel itching over body?
4. do you have diabetes, hypertension,depression/stress or any other illness?
5. any family history of chronic illness including liver pathology?
6. do you specifically get the symptoms after eating fatty meal?
7. any other symptom that you would like to share?
8. are you on any medication other than probiotic?
9. Whats your age and sex?

I will be looking forward for the answers to conclude the discussion in the best interest of yours.
Thank You

My appetite is okay. I am not jaundice. I am always a little itchy during winter and have experienced minor little rashes on arms and legs- on and off but it could just be dry skin. Nothing noticeable or lasting. I take levoxyl for hyperthyroidism but the Dr. thought my thyroid might be off so that is one of the blood tests he ran (I'm still waiting until Thursday for the result). I have an enlarged tongue he said with teeth marks on side but I've had that for as long as I can remember. I get my thyroid tested every year with GYN but it's always normal range. I take 125 mcg levothyroxine. He ran more extensive tests to see what's really going on. I also take Bupropion for Anxiety/depression 300 mg once a day. I am not very stressed or anxious these days other than wondering what is going on with my system. I've been taking Plexus brand probiotic, bio cleanse, pink slim and xfactor since Aug. The Dr. told me to take extra probiotics since he started me on Nystatin a month ago to help with the yeast issue. I have been taking up to 4 probiotics a day and 1 Nystatin pill. I have also been on magnesium, omega 3 Fish oil, and digestive enzymes plus I started Gaba and 5-Htp to help me sleep- stopped my gabapentin which I had been on for years for sleep. It seems to not be a problem getting off that. I have had diverticulitis twice in the past 5 years and have had 2 colonoscopies- all normal. I don't have any family with Liver disease. I am a 49 yr old female- 5'5" 130 lbs. I have had migraines since I was 22 and was previously on Topamax to help but after almost 2 years, it didn't seem to be doing much. My headaches had been getting worse over the past 3 years so that was the main reason I went to wellness Dr. to see about possible perimenapause or unbalanced hormones relating to that. He tested for all that stuff. Just don't know results..
Right now I am just not feeling great- a little nauseas, my head feels fuzzy and I'm a little tired. Just don't feel great. Have a little bit of pressure in my sinuses but that is the way I've felt for years. It's not as bad as before but it's there but weather is bad and wet and that is a trigger.
Today my stool is a little darker- not as pale yellow as before and slightly greenish. I have been eating more veggies, nuts the last few days. That's about it.

I actually have Hypothyroid- I typed that wrong. It's hereditary- my mom, grandma, sister all have it. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Could be liver pathology

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the detailed answers. I have gone through them. I concluded that your active issues are yellow stool & migraine headache. I'll discuss both separately for your ease:

a. headache:

There are two kinds of treatment for it; immediate & preventive. I usually start my patients with sumatriptan at an initial dose of 25 mg for pain relief. In addition, preventive medication can also be started to reduce the frequency(if headache occurs often). Options include propanolol & amitriptyline. Most of these drugs are prescription drugs so you need to visit hospital to get them.

General Measures:
These steps will help you to reduce the severity.

1. Diet:
Following food aggravates symptoms:
> Alcohol
> Caffeine overuse
> Chocolates
> Citrus Food & banana
> Dairy cheese
> Vinegar

2. Stress:
Stress is a potent stimulator of headache. So try not to take stress.

3. Exercise:
Try to have a walk in the evening for 30-45 mins. Change in environment will help to reduce stress & improve health.

4. Sleep:
Adequate sleep is very important. Sleep deprivation is a potent stimulator of headache. You need to manage adequate sleep of at least 5-7 hrs/day.

5. Light:
Flashing lights like in clubs also stimulates the headache so you need to avoid them.

6. Keep a Headache Diary:
It can help you keeping the record of triggers. Write down everything you eat and drink, your exercise routine and schedule, the weather, strong feelings and emotions you may be having, your medications and their effects, and times and severity of your headaches. This can help you see a pattern in your migraine occurrences, and will make avoiding one easier.

7. Hormonal Changes:
Particularly important for females as it may aggravate the headache, specially oral contraceptive pills.

8. Weather may also effect:
Humidity and hot temperatures can stimulate headaches, as can rainy days, so it’s important to be aware of your environment.

b. Yellow Stool:
I would suggest you to get your Liver Function tests (LFTs) done. They will help to rule out if there is any liver pathology(e.g hepatitis). Liver pathology causes decreased metabolism of biliruin(a by-product of heme) which imparts yellow color on skin as well as make stool dark. An appointment with a gastroenterologist will help you in this. He will perform general physical examination and some investigations like LFTs, stool C & E, CBC, etc.

c. Its good you thyroid levels are within the normal range. Try to keep it that way. Altered levels o thyroid hormone may also cause disturbance in bowel habits.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
