Constipation

What is Constipation?

Constipation (also known as costiveness) refers to bowel movements that are infrequent or hard to pass. Constipation is a common cause of painful defecation. Severe constipation includes obstipation (failure to pass stools or gas) and fecal impaction, which can progress to bowel obstruction and become life-threatening.

Constipation is a symptom with many causes. These causes are of two types: obstructed defecation and colonic slow transit (or hypomobility). About 50% of patients evaluated for constipation at tertiary referral hospitals have obstructed defecation. This type of constipation has mechanical and functional causes. Causes of colonic slow transit constipation include diet, hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism, side effects of medications, and rarely heavy metal toxicity. Because constipation is a symptom, not a disease, effective treatment of constipation may require first determining the cause. Treatments include changes in dietary habits, laxatives, enemas, biofeedback, and in particular situations surgery may be required.

Constipation is common; in the general population incidence of constipation varies from 2 to 30%. In the United States expenditures on medications for constipation are greater than $250 million per year.

I am suffering from Constipation .My age is 20,male,weight 70 kg and height 6ft. During my childhood days from birth up to 3 years,I used to suffer from constipation and blood in faeces. My diet was also healthy at that time. After this age everything went fine.I didn t suffer from constipation. When i attained the age of 12 years,I start getting acute pain in my stomach but didn t suffer from constipation. We did all the test and nothing found in my intestine.I took Ayurveda Medicines and continued it for 10 months. After completing the course of medicines everything went fine.During my teenage years I had eaten quite junk foods(was not a voracious eater). Now when I crossed the age of 16 constipation again attacked me but this time I suffered from constipation and flatulence only.I again had taken Ayurveda Medicine along with Aloevera juice and Indian gooseberry juice(amla). My mind completely completely changes and i became health conscious and had given up junk foods and other outside foods. After completing the Ayurveda Medicines constipation was gone. Ayurveda doctors told me to undergo Panchkarma kriya Now i have been eating only healthy foods(like all types of dry fruits, legumes, all kinds of vegetable, seasonal fruits, whole grain like oats, wheat bran and flax seed chapati, juices) for 2.5 years.Even after this strict diets I still suffer from constipation and it occurs in way that for a 15days i usually have bulky stools and for month I usually have light ant not bulky stools.presently i am not taking any medicines. I usually go to bed around 2am and wake up at 8am because of my engineering studies.I have 1 bowl movement per day but cannot clear my intestine well like a one who has healthy digestive system. Is allopathy and homeopathy has effective treatment for constipation? sir, please give me the effective solution so that i will not affect my professional life in future. Constipation persist when i don t take Aloevera and Amla juice and when i take these juices i able to clear my intestine well. NOTE-I have holidays for two months.I am not suffering from any disease right now except constipation(no acute pain, flatulence, gas, only vegetarian and no skin problems ) thanks to daily yoga and exercises. There is no worms in intestine and in faeces. Hi,

I read your concerns and in my opinion your symptoms are not related with IBS, but with urinary infection.

So, I would suggest doing urinary analysis and blood work and consult your physician to start antibiotic therapy.

For the moment I would advice:
- use plenty of water
- take a good...

Hello -

Wife is 65 years old and suffers from extreme constipation. She receives excellent medical care, UNC & Duke graduates, but neither her primary physician or her plethora of specialists seem to be able to offer practical suggestions.

Situation resulted from surgery in 2001 four “flat back” syndrome secondary to scoliosis. Nerve damage occurred during surgery with many negative outcomes, such as, chronic pain, bladder and bowel dysfunction, some paralysis in right leg.

She manages well, in spite of, these difficulties and prior to surgery was high functioning in very responsible position.

She takes heavy narcotics for pain which, of course, contributes to her problem. Also, she takes Miralax and copious fluids.

Bowel movements are unpredictable and can take hours to complete. This part of her disability severely constricts her quality of life.

Are there any suggestions, short of a colostomy, which might alleviate her symptoms of constipation, as well as, relieving the constipation itself.

I understand this is a complicated medical situation, but I am interested only in the bowel management issues.

Any suggestions? Any recommendations? Any solutions?

Thanks very much for your time and attention to this problem.

Regards,
William
