What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 7 Mar 2017
Question: i have a ferritin level of 15. my doctor wants me to have a colonoscopy. I have been having some symptoms in my legs that are very alarming to me. They are really shaky, weak, and feel numb inside at times. They also sometimes feel spastic, like I am not in total control of my movements. Could these leg symptoms be a result of the low ferritin level?

Brief Answer:
Please give me your complete blood count report.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

Your ferritin level is low. So it suggest iron deficiency.

Your symptoms can be due to anemia or may be due some other cause like vitamin deficiency, diabetes or some other reasons.

Ferritin is iron storage form. Low ferritin may leads to anemia and weakness but for that your other reports like complete blood count and others are required. So please send me your all reports.
So that I can help you further.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.

I have a CBC report from last July; I had a low ferritin then too. The CBC is as follows: WBC - 3.99 RBC - 4.63 hemoglobin - 14.5g/dL hematocrit - 44% MCV - 95fL MCH - 31.3pg MCHC - 32.9g/dL platelet count - 234 RDW-CV - 12.4%

So all of these values are normal, with only the ferritin out of line. My doctor thinks this could be caused by GI bleeding. But aside from that, could a low ferritin level cause the leg symptoms I have been having? Weakness, shakiness, lack of being able to control muscles, etc?

Brief Answer:
Your leg symptoms are due to other cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear

You r ferritin level is low but your hemoglobin and complete blood count is normal. Ferritin causes symptoms due to low hemoglobin. Here your hemoglobin is normal so your symptoms are due to some other reasons.

You need proper evaluation you should go for blood sugar level, vitamin B12 level and routine investigations like SGPT , creatinine etc.

You may have Gastrointestinal blood loss but you should for examination and investigations for your leg symptoms. Which are arising from different causes.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.

I should have added that I also had a hemoglobin A1C which was 5.6%, a vitamin B12 level which was 580 pg, and a vitamin D which was 49. My chem screen panel was normal also. I have 2 more questions:

I just got to thinking - if I had GI bleeding, wouldn't my hemoglobin also be low? And other aspects of my CBC be off?

And, finally, if my leg symptoms are not caused by my low ferritin, what could they be caused by? I have seen a neurologist, and also had an EMG which was normal. I think my PCP thinks it is all in my head, and it is very frustrating to not be taken seriously. These symptoms are very disturbing and debilitating.

Brief Answer:
Then you need examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

Your blood sugar, vitamin B12 and chemistry test all are normal.

You may have Gastrointestinal bleeding despite normal hemoglobin. But chances are low. You can go for Stool occult blood test first. It will give you idea whether go for scopy or not.

Your all reports are normal so it can be some neurological cause or may be in your mind. But it is not possible to say it without complete examination. Consult your neurologist and go for through examination.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
