What Does The Following Blood Test Report Indicate?

Question: Hi there,

I had some questions about some recent bloodwork (a CBC) as follows:

Test Low Normal High Flag Reference
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WBC | | 7.3 | | |3.8-10.8 TH/UL
RBC | | 4.75 | | |4.2-5.8 MIL/UL
HEMOGLOBIN | | 15.1 | | |14.0-18.0 G/DL
HCT | | 45.0 | | |38.5-50.0 %
MCV | | | 94.8 | H |80.0-94.0 FL
MCH | | 31.8 | | |26.0-34.0 PG
MCHC | | 33.5 | | |32.0-36.0 G/DL
RDWCV | | 13.2 | | |11.5-15.0 %
PLT | | 242 | | |140-400 TH/UL
MPV | | 8.7 | | |7.4-10.4 FL
NEUT | | 49.1 | | |40.0-85.0 %
LYMPH | | 35.7 | | |15.0-40.0 %
MONO | | 6.7 | | |0-10 %
EO | | | 7.7 | H |0.0-7.0 %
BASO | | 0.8 | | |0.0-2.0 %
MANUAL DIFF | | NO | | |
RBC MORPH | | NORMAL | | |NORMAL

Two values were elevated. The first was MCV (94.8 FL where normal is 80-94), and the second was EO (7.7% where normal is 0-7).

Do I need to be concerned about either of these? MCV seems less concerning than EO, as I'm aware too much EO can be very damaging to the heart, blood vessels (atherosclerosis), and other organs. Several months ago, a CBC found similar results.

Is EO at these levels over the long-term dangerous/harmful, or is it only harmful if it is much more severely elevated? Is their any additional risk having my EO at this percentage?

Thanks so much!

Brief Answer:
Need to find out the cause to high EO...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

Thank you for following up.

Having high EO is indicative for possible allergic reaction. Therefore, should find out what is causing this allergy?:
- medications?
- intestinal parasites?
- flowers/plants?
- chemicals

If it is idiopathic (no known cause), then, should keep regular follow ups:
- you should observe for possible symptoms like: fever? fatigue? joint aches? general discomfort? weight loss? night sweats?
- if these symptoms are present, then, should run further cardiac examinations to evaluate if heart damage are present?

With regards to MCV, it is slightly elevated and not of important significance.

Hi there,

I do have allergies (and had allergic asthma as a kid), to pollen, dust, weeds, and pets. I've had some normal allergic issues this summer, but no more than usual (and arguably less than a lot of people). I'm also aware psyllium can cause a high EO count in some people, and I do take that (Metamucil) nightly to help with IBS and constipation.

No real symptoms that I can point out, no. My EO has been elevated for a while, and around the time it was first taken several months ago (7.6% then), I had an echocardiogram, and it was fine.

At its current level (7.7%), will it actually cause damage?

I also had another question. I have a wrist BP monitor and also a cuff BP monitor (both automatic) to monitor my prehypertension. I noticed if I take my BP immediately after sitting (no rest), while standing, or after moderate activity while standing, diastolic BP is raised quite a bit (more apparent with the wrist monitor, but apparent with both). Is this normal? I've read that diastolic should fall when standing or doing activity. Though I'm also not sure if these monitors are accurate while standing.

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Allergy, asthma explain high EO,EBPM not accurate

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

Thank you for providing more of your medical data.

You are reporting a personal history of allergic asthma. This excludes idiopathic and parasitic causes to your high EO levels.

As long as you do not have any other symptom and that your cardiac echo resulted normal, then, this excludes heart damages.

However, I advise to run cardiac echo on yearly basis as regular follow up.

With regards to electronic blood pressure monitors (EBPM) you are using, I can admit that they are not as accurate when it comes to diastolic pressure.

So, I doubt their accuracy although your findings are not of significant importance.

With regards to increased diastolic pressure, there is no medication to treat it. The only treatment choice is lifestyle and diet changes:
- no alcohol
- no fatty foods
- more physical activity.

Hope it answered to your queries!

Hi there,

A couple clarifications please:

- Assuming the EO level is due to some kind of allergy/allergic asthma and not another cause, is it unlikely to damage heart/blood vessels, even over time?

- Is the cardiac echo recommendation purely because of EO level (to rule out other causes)?

- Just to reiterate, if diastolic is great sitting after rest, but a little elevated (90ish) standing, it's no cause to worry?

Thanks again!

Brief Answer:
EO high levels from allergy won't cause heart damage...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

Please find the following answers to your queries:

- When the cause of high EO levels is idiopathic or due to parasites might cause cardiac damages. While, high EO levels due to asthma/allergy won't cause any heart damage even for long-term.

- Cardiac echo is recommended as part of routine check up and is not indicated because of high EO levels

- There is no problem and no cause to worry as long as you continue to run changes in your diet and lifestyle regimen.

Hope it answered to your queries!
