Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: These are the symptoms i had post sex. Rash, sore throat, Penis chancre, lasted for aproximately 2 Weeks. Then came Flu Like Illness. Stuffy Nose, swollen Lymph all over, night sweats for 2 months, White Tongue with Lessions On Side. White Line on inner Cheek. discloration Of Toenails. Then gastro Intestinal Problems Confusion And Continued Malaise since First Set Of Symptoms, Stiff Neck, Shortness of Breathe ear Ache blurry symptoms reocurring throat issues. The girl I had Sex With Recently Got Over Flu And She was Complaining About Stiff Neck. And Throat Issues. I had a 6 week 12 week 17 week hiv1/o/2 icma antibody test poat exposure negative. And then a 21 week hiv ag/ab negative. Then i had a 28 week hiv1/o/2 antibody test and finally an 11 month hiv1/o/2 antibody test all negative. Still to this day im suffering from tongue lesion on side of tongue, lymph node swelling behind left ear and under left jaw and blurry vision. The girl i slept with unprotected had told me she had just gotten over the flu when i met her and she continued being somewhat ill during the time we dated not hiv what other virus could cause this or should i continue to test for hiv. Are the test reliable. It seems to much of a coincidence that i would get sick approximately 2 weeks after having sex with this girl.. All doctors say i am fine despite symptoms.

Brief Answer:
No further test for HIV is necessary. You are free from HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

First thing I want to emphasize is that you are HIV free. All the test done by you are highly reliable. If these tests negative even after 21 weeks with a combo test, there is no chance of HIV infection in your body. Just forget that and cheer up yourself.
All your symptoms might be due to an ordinary viral fever you acquired from that girl through an air born infection, not through sexual transmission.
Chancre is a syphilitic manifestation and could be confirmed only through an experienced Venereologist and not by any other physician or anybody else.
All that appear over penis are not chancre. Might be a balanitis or a traumatic ulcer. Similarly all lesions over tongue, cheek were not necessarily due to HIV. Once again a well experienced HIV physician can easily make out whether it is a lesion due to HIV or not.
Nothing to worry.
Follow the advice of your physician regards to your present illness. Get well soon.

I continue to have minor symptoms for 11 months after the sexual exposure. I also have involuntary muscle jumping and hand numbness on right hand when i wake up in the morning. Only diagnosis i see is hiv because of when symptoms started after exposure. Idk what else to do all doctors say bloodwork is fine and tests or negative but im still experiencing something and i have swollen lymph behind ear and under jaw which i read most likely represents sexually transmitted disease..

Brief Answer:
Symptoms are not related to HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Once again I affirm you that muscle twitching and numbness of hand are not early HIV manifestations. HIV early symptoms start by 4 weeks and may likely to persist for 2 weeks then the individual will be totally asymptomatic. Then the real disease manifest only after 5-7 years when the immunity go worst. Till then there will not be any symptom. So your problems are not at all related to HIV. It is your physician's part to find a cause for your problem. You are HIV free. No more testing is necessary.

All these symptoms came after unprotected sex with a girl of unknown status.. I have blurry vision, swollen lymph behind ear and under jaw both on left side. White tongue with lesions on right side. Hand numbness muscle twitching involuntarily. If not hiv what else can i ask doctors to test for they continue to give me anxiety medication. But i had no symptoms until after sexual contact and sickness.. I also had a full std panel. So i had no hepatitis or syphillis.. What can i suggest to my doctor because i am skeptical that anxiety can cause so many symptoms

Brief Answer:
Symptoms will subside spontaneously after sometime.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome once again.

It is quite possible to have all these symptoms following the unprotected sex, even in the absence of HIV (indicated by the repeated negative tests), through an air-born infection (either viral or bacterial) during close intimacy.
We can not have any specific test other than testing for influenza virus or culture from throat or nasal swab for bacteria. All these symptoms will settle spontaneously within few days. Nothing to worry.

Brief Answer:
In presence of HIV infection, test could not remain negative for 11 months

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
There is nothing like that in the presence of a HIV infection, one remains with HIV test negative till 11 months. It is not possible. Your physician has to find out the reason for your repeated problems.

I read that antibody test were negative for acute infections but hiv rna test were positive. Would my infection still be considered acute after 11months cause i only had antibody 3rd generation test and one 4th generation test. I never had hiv rna testing. Do i need to take an rna test because Some symptoms still persist.

Brief Answer:
P24 antigen in 4th generation test detect HIV in acute infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome BACK.

Acute infection never persists up to 11 months. It will start around 4 weeks after the possible infection and lasts for 2-3 weeks. That is all. Then once again the individual remains without any symptoms up to 5- 7 years in the presence of HIV infection.
4th generation test is incorporated with P 24 antigen test which can detect the infection as that of RNA PCR during acute infection. Moreover RNA PCR is mostly available as quantitative test. Qualitative test available only in certain Labs. Quantitative test interpretation my confuse you once again. So it is not advisable DNA PCR is preferable But it is not necessary for you as you had already 4th generation test negative.
