Question: I'm a 75 year old woman, diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age 11, diabetes at 65, and have trouble losing weight,@ 200 lbs and a strict vegan, my hands are red and hot , rapid heart and insomnia. I have pretty good control of diabetes, with exercise and diet, and herbs. I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease,by my dermatologist, but the drug plaquenil made me very ill, now my hands are very hot and painful.

Brief Answer: Endocrine Detailed Answer: Would you know the name of the skin condition I presume, your dermatologist has diagnosed you with? Taking a higher than required dose of thyroid medication can cause some of the symptoms you are reporting. So if your most recent TSH is below the lower limit of normal , and the Free T4 is above the upper limit of normal, you have excess thyroid hormone in your body which can very well explain the symptoms you are experiencing. It is good to note your diabetes is well controlled without medication.

Dr. Topiwala, I went to Dr. Boswell because my scalp was burning, and my hair was falling out. He did a biopsy and this is the result: EARLY LYMPHOCYTE MEDIATED SCARRING ALOPECIA SUPERIMPOSED ON A BACKGROUND OF ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA . ''many months h/o "burning scalp" but clinically non-scarring androgenetic alopecia with thinning on central scalp; r/o androgenetic alopecia vs early lichen planis/lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia. I must also tell you, my main concern is I ,had a laparoscopy in 2005 ,and the surgeon put two titanium mesh in my small intest. I am highly allergic to any kind of metal, and believe this may be my problem. It's as tho I am having a severe allergy attack all the time!

Brief Answer: Follow up Detailed Answer: I have noted your comments The above has no bearing on the thyroid. If your TSH and free T4 are normal then the thyroid is well replaced

I never said it was caused by my thyroid, I'm asking you because my primary ph. is too busy to take the time to really examine me, and figure it out. He has me on .25 mcg levothyroxine, I don' think that's too much. I only have 1/2 a thyroid, and it ' s full of nodules. Did you have an opportunity to view the diagnoses, from my dermatologist? He told me I have an auto-immune disease, but doesn't really know why. I believe it's from the two mesh implant's causing a severe allergic reaction. please answer my question, my hands are hot, and so is my scalp, and losing hair, insomnia, weakness ,tired ,I can't function in my daily duties. My health is every thing to me, I have overcome cancer of the throat, and bowels after being given up by the drs. . If you can't help, maybe another dr. might. Would you please consult with an Internist? I need an answer. Thank you. I submitted the last query yesterday, and it has not been answered as yet. I am still waiting, I understood at that time I still had 1 follow-up question, and 2 days 23 hrs. and a few mins. remaining. Will someone please answer my last question? I don't believe my original question has been answered as yet, I don't believe my problem is my thyroid. I feel as if I'm fighting a severe allergy, to metal, in particular. It was put into my body during surgery, and I need help! Any suggestions? Thank you.

Brief Answer: Second follow up Detailed Answer: I read your skin diagnosis. It has no direct association with the thyroid. It may indicate a general tendency that you may have towards acquiring auto immune diseases. Would you know if your thyroid antibodies are positive? Such as the anti TPO (Thyroid peroxidase) and anti TG (Thyroglobulin) antibodies. If you have nodules in the thyroid then an ultrasound is the best way to assess them. As a thyroid/diabetes/ endocrine expert I have tried to help you rule out hormonal causes of your symptoms. If these are not responsible for your symptoms, as it appears to be the case, then you are certainly encouraged to consult an Internist
