A condition which is characterized by inflammation of the peripheral retina of the eye. Pars planitis is a benign condition; there can be significant vision loss in extreme cases.

 

It is an immunological disorder of the eye characterized pars planitis is benign condition, there can be significant vision loss in extreme cases. It affects both eyes (80%).

 

Symptoms

  • History of floaters
  • Defective vision
  • Swelling of the eye
  • There can be significant vision loss in extreme cases. 

Tests and Examination

  • Slit lamp examination shows mild aqueous flare, fine KP’s at the back of cornea.
  • Fundus examination shows whitish exudates near ora serrata in the inferior quaternt (snow ball appearance

Treatments

  • Oral Corticosteroids   and repeated periocular injections some occations.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs- Cyclosporine, Methotrexate, and others
  • Peripheral cryotherapy

Complications

Long standing cases of pars planitis can manifest as cystoids macular odema, cataract and tractional retinal detachment.
