There are no symptoms, but BP readings can make the diagnosis

• Mild high BP is diastolic pressure between 90 and 99.
• Moderate high BP is a diastolic pressure between 100 and 109.
• Severe high BP is a diastolic pressure above 110.

If there is only rise in BP with out protein in urine it is called gestational diabetes.

If the rise in BP is associated with presence of protein in urine it is called Preeclampsia.

If the patient has high BP before pregnancy or are diagnosed after 20 weeks it is called as chronic hypertension.

Complications of high blood pressure

• Intrauterine growth retardation.
• Preterm birth.
• Placental abruption.
• Still birth.

Tests and diagnosis

• Ultrasound scan.
• Biophysical profile.
• Doppler ultrasound.
• Urine tests.
• Non stress test.

Treatment

• Observation.
• Bed rest.
• Medications.
• Low salt diet.
• More frequent prenatal visits.
• Early delivery after 36 weeks.
• Antihypertensives like methyldopa, hydralazine, labetol.
• If the patient develops preeclampsia early delivery is suggested.
