Posted on Mon, 7 Nov 2016
Question: Sir i was a regular basis drinker in April this year i went for LFT blood test in results i got
AST (SGOT) = 34
ALT (SGPT) = 75
GGTP = 27

and i last had drink on 8th August this year since that i did not drink till now which means i am sober since last 2 months i have not touch any alcohol beverage and today that is on 14 October 2016 i again went for SGPT test and today in result there was not any change in my SGPT and it came 74

SO my question is why my SGPT lever is not decreasing i know in clinical terms the SGPT level utp 93 is considered as normal range but earlier when i dont use to drink my all liver enzymes were below 50 now i am littler worried that why its not decreasing i am on good diet that is i am also drinking lemon water which is good for liver but still my SGPT lever is 74 i want my SGPT level to be below 50 so polease suggest me and help me how can i decrease my SGPT level.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Lifestyle changes & Vitamin E supplements

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.

There's nothing to worry about it.

The normal levels of the given liver enzymes:

SGOT: 5 - 42
SGPT : 6 - 55
GGTP : 12 - 64

Therefore, your SGOT and GGTP are within the normal range.
Usually it takes 6 to 8 weeks or more for the liver enzymes to return to normal if strictly follow the advice, since SGOT and GGTP are within their normal ranges, so SGPT will also gradually return to its normal value in due course of time.

I would advise you to:
1. Avoid alcohol or alcohol containing beverages (beer, whisky, etc) and smoking completely.
2. Take Vit E tablets that are found to protect the liver from injuries.
3. Take fresh fruits and vegetables as they contain anti oxidants, and vitamins help in protecting your liver
4. Avoid taking oily vegan and non vegan foods, specially fast and junk foods, drugs like Paracetamol in large doses.
5. Drink plenty of water.

Have periodic visit your doctor for liver function tests.
If the SGPT level does not return to its normal range, then you must do an abdominal ultrasound scan, serological tests to rule out hepatitis in addition to liver function tests.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions I shall be glad to answer.
Kindly regards.
Wish you a good health.

Sir i dont smoke and now since last 2 months i neither drink i quit drinking for forever, I also not take any oily or junk food i only eat vegetables and pulses along with curd 2 times a day that is in lunch and in dinner rest whole day i drink 4 cup o green tea 2 glass of lemonade and 2 litres of water every night before sleep.

i have gone through whole abdomincal ultrasound in which reports come all normal and i also went for serological test whose report also come negative its been almost 60 days i did not touch any alcohol beverage and i thought my SGPT would have gone to below 50 till now in mean time but today after gone through blood check it was still there only at 74 so my concern is if my all and everything and every reports come normal then why this time only from last year and so i am facing my sgpt level is elevated as earlier before my drinking habit all enzymes were less than below 50.

in mean while a year ago i went for checkup where doctor prescribe me UDILIV 300 mg for 14 days and after taking that medicine for 14 days my enzymes reports come normal that is bnelow 50 but as i quit taking udiliv a month after i again went for SGPT test where my result come 120 and since then i regularly in 6 months test for SGPT levels.

Whenever i take udiliv 300 mg my test comes normal after that but as soona s i quit taking medicine it again comes as usual like it used to come elevated so is there any medicine or syrup that can help my liver enzyme to be stable and at normal that is less than 50 without any side effects of permanent damage of liver or liver cirrhosis. and i also want to know usually how many days does these elevated enzymes take to get normal Because this time i went for blood test after 8 weeks and still SGPT test result were elevated that is 74 without any drastic change .

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Tab Silymarin.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi & Welcome back.
Thanks for your reply. Noted its contents.

First of all I would to say liver has its own power to regenerate, so if you've stopped consuming alcohol since two months there is no further liver damage as it is reflected in the declining levels of the liver enzymes, gradually it would recover on its own.

As I mentioned earlier, it usually takes 6 to 8 weeks or more for the liver enzymes to return to normal.

In view of the normal liver function tests, serological tests for hepatitis, and abdominal ultrasound scan such a mild rise of SGPT has no significance and can be taken as normal.

However, I would advise you to take Tab Silymarin-a herbal product which is usually free from side effects, it has a liver protective property and can be taken three times daily.

Wishing you best of your health.

Thank you Sir for answering.

Sir in my mind i m thinking as you said 6 to 8 weeks are sufficient for liver enzymes to get back to normal as liver is the only organ in body that regenerates its cell with time.

but sir this time that is why i went for blood check up again after 8 weeks only and ALT difference that come is of 1 i.e. 74 and last time it was 75 .

Sir ok as per your advice i am ready to take Silymarin Tablets will these below silymarin tablets will be safe to take :

http://www XXXXXXX in/Healthvit-Silymarin-Thistle-Standardized-Capsules/dp/B01BM55NRQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=0000&sr=1-2&keywords=silymarin

Also, Sir along with this SIlymarin tablet shall i also take Udilive 300 mg or Liv 52 Syrup or Livosin Syrup because i am little scared of taking Udiliv 300mg as i read that taking udiliv for long term in between that is leaving for few months and taking it back again can cause permanent damage to liver and needs to transplant liver.

And sir after going through all your adivce that is of taking Silymarin tablet or whatever you will say then after tkaing that when should i again go for these Enzymes test because if i go for test immediately after completing the course then for sure results will going to come in its normal range so after completing the course advice by you when shall i go for blood check for these enzymes after how many days so that results can be seen natural.

Thank you.

and sir what shall i do if after taking Silymarin tablet and syrups or whatever you advice and still my result not come with in range after completion of course then shall i understand that my liver got permannently damage or what shall i do then ? and what should i think of it

doctor it is said that silymarin also protects person from having any cancer but can it be a cause of getting cancer ?

Brief Answer:
Avoid taking Udilive

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX, Hi & Welcome back.
Thanks for your reply. Noted its contents.

There's nothing to worry at all.

1. Udiliv (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is a bile acid used to dissolve gallstones in patients who do not want surgery or cannot have surgery to remove gallstones.
It is also used to prevent the formation of gallstones in overweight patients who are undergoing rapid weight loss.
I would not advise you to take this medication and as per the various clinical studies, it has no beneficial effects in liver injury caused by alcohol intake.

2. You can take Liv 52 which is a herbal formulation and which contains various antioxidants which are beneficial in reversing the liver injury.

3. Take Silymarin with or without Liv 52 for at least 4-6 weeks, then repeat the liver function tests and get an ultrasound scan done.

Hope I could answer your queries.
Have faith in God and the medications.
Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery.
