Smoking

What is Smoking?

Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the resulting smoke breathed in to be tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. Most commonly the substance is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant which have been rolled into a small square of rice paper to create a small, round cylinder called a "cigarette". Smoking is primarily practiced as a route of administration for recreational drug use because the combustion of the dried plant leaves vaporizes and delivers active substances into the lungs where they are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and reach bodily tissue. In the case of cigarette smoking these substances are contained in a mixture of aerosol particles and gasses and include the pharmacologically active alkaloid nicotine; the vaporization creates heated aerosol and gas to form that allows inhalation and deep penetration into the lungs where absorption into the bloodstream of the active substances occurs. In some cultures, smoking is also carried out as a part of various rituals, where participants use it to help induce trance-like states that, they believe, can lead them to "spiritual enlightenment".

Cigarettes are primarily industrially manufactured but also can be hand-rolled from loose tobacco and rolling paper. Other smoking implements include pipes, cigars, bidis, hookahs, vaporizers, and bongs. Smoking-related diseases have been shown to kill approximately half of long term smokers when compared to average mortality rates faced by non-smokers. A 2007 report states that, each year, about 4.9 million people worldwide die as a result of smoking.

Smoking is one of the most common forms of recreational drug use. Tobacco smoking is the most popular form, being practiced by over one billion people globally, of whom the majority are in the developing world. Less common drugs for smoking include cannabis and opium. Some of the substances are classified as hard narcotics, like heroin, but the use of these is very limited as they are usually not commercially available.

The history of smoking can be dated to as early as 5000 BC, and has been recorded in many different cultures across the world. Early smoking evolved in association with religious ceremonies; as offerings to deities, in cleansing rituals or to allow shamans and priests to alter their minds for purposes of divination or spiritual enlightenment. After the European exploration and conquest of the Americas, the practice of smoking tobacco quickly spread to the rest of the world. In regions like India and Sub-Saharan Africa, it merged with existing practices of smoking (mostly of cannabis). In Europe, it introduced a new type of social activity and a form of drug intake which previously had been unknown.

Perception surrounding smoking has varied over time and from one place to another; holy and sinful, sophisticated and vulgar, a panacea and deadly health hazard. In the 20th century smoking come to be viewed in a decidedly negative light, especially in Western countries. This is due to smoking tobacco being among the leading causes of many diseases such as lung cancer, heart attacks, COPD, erectile dysfunction, and birth defects. The health hazards of smoking have caused many countries to institute high taxes on tobacco products, run ads to discourage use, limit ads that promote use, and provide help with quitting for those who do smoke.

I have been smoking marijuana for 8+ years and have had an ear infection before but would usually just cut back and the symptoms would go away. but about to weeks ago I felt another infection coming on and so I actually quit smoking for 2 days and it felt like it was gone so I started smoking again but then the symptoms came back so I quit for around 4 days and thought it was gone again and again smoked and it came back. So i stopped smoking and was taking some nasal decongestion medicine and it seemed to help clear up my ears for a few days and so this time instead of smoking the marijuana I ate it a brownie and now Im noticing the symptoms again from just eating marijuana edibles and I really dont understand whats going on I have a medical card for cannibus for years and I use it everyday to help with sleep, appetite , anxiety and a lot of other things and now that I cant medicate my sleep schedule is all messed up and I have no appetite and am having a lot of problems but I am not smoking anything at all. I have tried using the ear wax removal kits and my ears feel clean exept late at night or after I medicate with cannibus plus the clogged feeling seems to build up and then loosen slightly over and over instead of a steady clogged feeling from wax build up. Please help I feel I can not go on without my medication but my ears dont seem to be clearing up, It has been around two weeks total since the first symptoms and I feel that taking this cold medicine for over two weeks is not good, could this be a fungis infection or something else?

Two weeks ago i went to the doctor because my right tonsil was swollen, painful to swallow , white spots and hoarse voice. They had said I had tonislities and was treated for it for 10 days on amoxicillin . Was feeling better and know today after smoking three cigarettes it started to hurt again and is swollen. Could the cigarettes have irritated the tonsil or could it be that hasnt gone away completely and may need a stronger antibiotic?

doctor1 MD

Your tonsillitis which got subsided by antibiotic can flare up again with smoke as smoke acts as an irritant and also affects the cilliary function. This can lead to reappearance of symptoms. So, please use hexidine gargles and stop smoking. Regards

My son is in drug court. He is approximately 320 lbs. He has been a heavy pot smoker since he was approximately 14. He has not smoked now for at least one month almost two. He also has a possibility of having some kidney problem. His THC levels are still very high. In fact, a judge put him in jail because his levels are still so high and they insist he is still smoking. What could cause this?
