Question: My Lipid panel results are Total Cholesterol 119, HDL 45 L, LDL 58, Triglycerides 78 my chol/hdlc ratio 2.6 I was told by my endocrinologist my HDL is low and needs to be raised. Does the HDL being this low with my other numbers increase my risk of heart attack or stroke? What can I do to raise the HDL if needed?

Brief Answer:
Your lipid profile seems to be within the normal limits

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern, and would like to explain that your blood lipid profile seems to be within the normal limits.

The total cholesterol/HDL ratio is more indicative of cardiovascular disease than TC (total cholesterol).

For men an acceptable ratio of TC/HDL is 4.5 or below.

So based on your lipid profile, you have a very low risk for cardio vascular disease.

Regarding HDL, it helps remove cholesterol from the body by transporting it to the liver.

HDL levels have an inverse relationship with coronary heart disease. It is a protecting factor against cardio vascular disease.

The ability of HDL to predict the development of coronary atherosclerosis has been estimated to be four times greater than LDL and eight times greater than TC.

But treatment is recommended for those with an HDL level below 40 mg/dL, which is not your case.

So no medical therapy is needed in your case, and you are not at any obvious risk for cardio vascular disease.

Anyway, here are some tips how to raise your HDL cholesterol levels:

1.     A lot of physical exercise ( walking, aerobics)
2.     Cessation of smoking
3.     Weight reduction, especially if you are overweight.

Hope to have been of help!

Best regards,

Dr. Iliri
