What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,
I did a Blood count and Platelet, WIDAL and malaria profile tests on 05 January, 2015. The result show that in respect of the RBC, my PCV (39), MCV (77), MCH (26) are low while RDW (16.1) is high. As regards the WBC my Neutrophilis (1.93) is low and Platelet Count (103) is low. The report says I have mild thrombocytopaenia which can be due to viral infection, drugs, malaria or other causes. The Pathologist Blood Film Review shows RBC - Normochromic Normocytic Red Cells: WBC- Few atypical lymphocytes seen. Platelet - Adequate on film. The following comment was made on the report: "Atypical Lymphocytes May seen in acute viral infections. Correlate with Clinical Detail". The malaria profile result says: Malaria Parasite: Both Thin film and Thick film- Not detected. P. falciparum antigen Negative. The Widal Test shos Negative in all respects.

Against the background that I am positive for HBV ( I picked it up early in life and my recent viral load results shows "not seen". I am married with 4 kids and my wife is not infected), please interpret the above result and say if the reference to "mild thrombocytopaenia" and "atypical lympocytes" indicates I am suffering from any ailment and possible treatment options.

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and gone through your test results in details.

You have nothing to worry about.Your tests result are within normal range.

Although your Hemoglobin is just above the lower limit of the reference range considering your gender and age ,it is considered normal. This means that you are not anemic.
Low levels of PCV ,MCV and MCH are indicative for anemia. This tests evaluate the number of cells in blood (PCV) ,the size and content of red blood cells (RBD).
In your case there are not low, they are within normal ranges.Every lab uses different references and what is low for a lab is normal at another lab.
These values in your case are not low enough to indicate a problem.
The fact that your red blood cells look Normochromic Normocytic in blood films means that you are not anemic ,so your red blood cells are normal (so MCV and MCH is normal).
RWD stands for Red cell distribution width, which is a parameter that measures variation in red blood cell size or red blood cell volum.
High RWD may occur in early nutritional deficiency such as iron, folate, or vitamin B12 deficency. It becomes elevated earlier than other red blood cell parameters and may indicate anemia related to nutritional deficiency .
Since all the other parameter are normal and the red blood cells look normal on blood film you don't need to worry.

The report says that you have mild Thromocytopaenia but this test is not always accurate and for this reason it is necessary to evaluate the Thrombocytes on blood film .In this report the pathologist says that your Thrombocytes are normal in film so you don't need to worry about it.

Regarding the tests to detect if you are infected with Malaria parasites ,they are all negative which means that you are not infected.

Few atypical lymphocytes are seen in blood film. This means that a small number of lymphocytes looks different under microscope .Viral infections can cause this. The fact that you are positive for HBV may explain it or if you have had a viral infection lately.
All the blood tests should be evaluated in the clinical contest and related with all other parameter of blood tests .Your blood tests result are all in normal range so this tests don't indicate anything that would require further evaluation.

You may repeat again the blood tests in 1-2 months and see if everything will be normal but right now you have nothing to worry about.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.
I will be happy to assist you further.
