What Causes Unexplained Feeling Of Hunger And Throat Pain Upon Waking Up?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Jan 2017
Question: Hi, the doctor said I have swollen lymph nodes and I just got a blood test done, breath test, and urine test a couple days ago. I have bad anixety and mostly healthy anxiety. Last night I had a hungry feeling in my stoamch and woke up this morning with a burning feeling in throat. I have had bad indigestion lately. This doesn't feel like the normal stomach flu. I have bad stomach pain all day and I need reassurance and some assistance. I can't eat or drink. Have not thrown up yet. What is wrong and what do i do? I can barely get water down let alone food.

Hello,

The hungry stomach feeling and burning in your throat is from stomach acid. It may be causing the stomach pain too. It could be from a gastrointestinal infection if you are having a lot of churning and pain all over your abdomen. And the Pepto Bismol may help that. But if it is mostly pain in one place, in the upper middle or upper left of the abdomen, then it may be from stomach irritation that was caused by any number of things.

If you are having acid coming up/burning in your throat, consider taking Zantac 150 mg twice a day. This will allow your stomach and esophagus to heal.

When you say you can barely get water down - is that because your stomach hurts so much or because you feel nauseated?

And is the pain crampy or gnawing or something else?

Where is the pain located on your abdomen?

Thank you

I can't get water down because its hard to swallow and everything I eat I can feel going down into my stomach.
I feel like its all laying on my chest and its heavy. Im a college student so this past semester I didnt have the best diet. Over time i gained a bubble in my throat. An air bubble sort of that I couldn't breathe or eat.

My stomach currently is achy at times and then gnawing. It is a hungry feeling and burning sensations come and go. It feels like tight and squeezed as well as bloated.

The pain is all over.

What is a gastrointestinal infection? Stomach flu? or something much worse?
I don't know what else to do or take because I can't eat without feeling heavy in my chest.

Thank you

Still trying to sort this out

Detailed Answer:
The kind of gastrointestinal infection I am referring to is "stomach flu".

If it is a gnawing feeling rather than cramping, then I suggest trying the Zantac.

I am not sure what you mean about an air bubble in your throat. When you said that you have swollen lymph nodes, I'm assuming you mean in your neck. So perhaps you have an upper respiratory infection such as a cold. Are you having post nasal drainage that is causing the bubble feeling in your throat?

Before you started to have the stomach problem, did you take any ibuprofen or naproxen? Because that may be what set off your stomach.

Not sure why the breath test, but have you had your throat swabbed or checked for mono or strep?

What had you gone to the doctor for that they did these 3 tests?

I'm trying to sort out the various pieces of information you gave me.

The air bubble in my throat was a sensation that when I swallowed, there was a lump. It felt like an air bubble was stuck in my throat. It would go away if If forced myself to burp.

I did have sinus infection that went away but I do frequently have post nasal drip that doesnt go away. Its phelgm that has to be swallowed down and can sometimes make my throat feel tight. Also i cough up phlegm frequently too. This also affected the "air bubble" but it was mostly affected by food or when i ate. My sinus infection did go away with amoxicillin but I still have post nasal drip to this day and nothing else. I also get pressure between my eyes that comes and goes.

I did my yearly check up early with my doctor since I am home for the winter break. I told him about symptoms I had been having about the bubble sensation, heartburn and chest ache, sore throat, extremley tired (could sleep for days).
He felt my neck and realized that my lymph nodes were extremely swollen. He was confused as to why. I have also a history of thyroid which my mom thought I had attained and wanted me to ask the doctor. He said my thyroid felt fine but my neck was swollen. He told me Zantac but I ended up forgetting the name of it after I left. I will try that next.

He told me to do blood again and check for mono and strep. He was also checking for allergies and iron? Not sure exaclty but when i went to give blood I had to give about 7 tubes and I had to take a urine and breath test. The breath test was a XXXXXXX to me i am not sure what I took it for exactly and it was my first time taking it.

I got blood rawn about 6 months ago and a few things came up such as a low platelet level, high red blood cell distribution, as well as high mean platelet volume. Can mono come up on a blood test now?

I will definitely try Zantac though.

It's all a mixture of symptoms that are making me feel so sick and weird.

Hi XXXXXXX

Ok, this information helps.

So your doctor was thinking along the same lines I am.

The breath test would be to check for H. pylori which can cause gastritis and ulcers.

And strep and mono can cause swollen lymph glands.

Checking for iron levels is good too because iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia in young women due to menstruation, and can make a person feel very fatigued.

For the chronic post nasal drainage, consider using a nasal steroid such as Flonase, which you can buy without prescription. It can take a week or so for it to really start working, but it can stabilize the sinus membranes so that there may be less drainage.

Yes, mono can show up on a blood test now, if you have actively swollen lymph glands.

Okay great, thank you so much. My throat isn't hurting today but my neck is super swollen and I feel like I can barely swallow. I have a lot of facial pain and still lots of drainage. I continue to clear my throat as well.

I just purchased zantac because my stomach is still burning but way better than yesterday. Once I purchae it I will continue to try and eat. I do get sharp pains under my rib on my left (your right side if you were looking at me). Otherwise my stomach is a lot better.

Any recommendations on making lymph nodes stop hurting? Sort of a lump like feeling when i swallow or eat. Im not sure about advil becasue im scared itll burn my stomach.
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Yes, I would not use Advil or any NSAIDs. Tylenol would be safer. You can put hot, damp, wash cloths or towels around the back and sides of your neck to help the lymph node pain.

Have you heard back about the results of the mono test?

If you truly are unable to swallow because of throat/tonsil swelling, you will need to go back to see the doctor - your own or urgent care clinic - and may need oral steroids such as prednisone to decrease the inflammation.

Once you start the Zantac, don't take antacids as they can interfere.

Okay great.

I havent heard but i did make an appointment for the doctor for Friday. I did have my tonils remove. Its just my neck and pain in my lymph nodes. No sore throat. just nasal drip and on and off headache. Continual stomach pain. Extremely tired as well. Facial pain, jaw pain, and ear pain. Can't open my mouth all the way.

I dont even feel sick. I just feel pain in my neck and its painful.

Hopefully my results are in by Friday but if not can my doctor still give me anything for painful lymph nodes with no other symptoms?

Yes, if they are quite swollen or he thinks there is an infection, he may consider antibiotics and corticosteroids (prednisone, etc) depending on what he thinks when he examines them.

Do take the Zantac and make sure to keep hydrated.
