I am taking ferrous gluconate for iron deficiency anemia....each pill is 325 mg with 34 units of elemental iron. The dosing is confusing....not sure if the therapeutic does refers to the actual pill or to the actual dose of elemental iron. I am currently taking 2 325 mg pills every 12 hours. That gives me 68 units of iron every 12 hours....Am I calculating this correctly?

doctor1 MD

Hello.

Iron supplements are available in different forms one of which is the gluconate salt. This has better absorption and tolerance than the other forms.

The standard dosage of iron i.e. the dose at which the body can be expected to absorb iron most is not fixed as such. Usually followed is...

My son has been diagnosed with iron deficient anemia. Also with his blood test is showed his SED rate at 56 - quite elevated even though he is anemic. The pathology from blood work though showed that all cells were normal. What should I be thinking? What is wrong? Other info you need to know - he has a TERRIBLE diet - eats only bland things - doesn't eat a lot of anything.

doctor1 MD

Hi
I think your child need to change his eating habits. He should also take green leafy vegetables, take nonveg, pomegranate juice is rich in iron. Additionally he must be given iron tablets / syrup depending upon his tolerance. Kindly also go for deworming as well. He will be fine soon.

I have a low WBC. I have B12 anemia and iron deficiency anemia 10 years post gastric bypass. I also have scattered petechiae on my upper body, joint aches and pains and fatigue. I take B12 injections now every 2 weeks and had an iron infusion 6 weeks ago. I still don t feel well. Any thoughts?

I have a history of anemia. My iron stores have been low the past year or so. I started a low dose birth control pill that regulated my periods during the same time. Up until recently they have been very regular, with no change in iron levels. Now I have been bleeding for 45 days. Dr's are not sure why my levels never went up but they did infusions. Why all of a sudden is my period irregular again. Would the iron infusions contribute to this? Will they even work if my period does not stop?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...my 3 children and I have had strange symptoms for over 4 months such as black specs and also white- transparent oval shaped things in bowel movement. There is occasional red- orange forms present as well. Slightly larger than pepper pieces are found stuck to skin on body, normally around feet, hands, genital region, etc. Skin lesions randomly occur with accompanying irritation, stinging sensation, itch, and burn. Numbness, swelling, and discoloration of hands, blotchy red patches of skin come and go. Recently I have been diagnosed with severe iron deficiency anemia, blood count of 8, prolapsed cervix. I am also losing hair and have chronic fatigue and weakness. I am just a 27 year old mom of three. Also, I recently discovered mold like substance with foul odor caked underneath washing machine, and various regions of walls in house have small discolred dots, line marks or substance on them. Do you have any idea what type of condition we suffer from? Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated.
