What Causes Sneezing After Nasal Flu Spray Shot?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Oct 2014
Question: Hi. I just went to the doctor two days ago for a physical and they asked if i wanted the flu shot because they just got them delivered that day. I was like sure why not i always get the flu shot. However she gave me two options: the shot, or the nose spray (which was new) so i went with the nose spray because i hate shots. And now my nose is stuffy and runny, i have postnasal drip, and i keep sneezing. Is this normal? Because when i have gotten the shot in the past this never happened to me

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. These symptoms are seen after the flu vaccine is delivered via the nose. Check if the vaccine was a live attenuated one or if there were any preservatives in an inactivated or recombinant vaccine.

2. Most people do not get these symptoms.

3. As long as the symptoms are mild, there is no active treatment necessary.

4. Do bring this to the notice of your doctor immediately and a make a note to avoid this route next time.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. No, this is normal but such reactions are seen in very few of the people who receive the nasal vaccine. For example this is seen in people with egg allergy.

2. Hence you must inform your doctor. If the symptoms are mild there is no active treatment required.

3. Let your doctor decide the next course of action.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Your tongue seems ok. There is a mild glossitis with fissures that are normally known as a geographic tongue. There is a slight white coating on area of the tongue. This is also fairly common. This does not appear to be oral thrush or a fungal infection.

2. Stress, vitamin deficiencies, acid reflux, indigestion, a post nasal drip / sinusitis, low hemoglobin, overuse of medicated mouthwashes and dehydration are common causes for such an appearance of the tongue.

3. Negative tests after a month would rule out most STDs besides HIV. HIV has very low transmission from an infected partner with your episode. HIV is a highly controllable disease as of today. However due to the incubation period, you will have to be patient and wait for a couple of months and test again. After three months if both you and your boyfriend are tested negative, there is no cause for worry. Till then avoid any further exposure.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Your tongue does look better than the earlier image.

2. Do not stress over the look. It is fairly normal. Just get an opinion from a physician to look for the possible causes for the commonly seen fissures on the tongue. It will be one or a combination of some of the causes listed above.

3. Treat the possible causes and the tongue will heal. Do you get any pain, altered taste or burning sensation due to these tongue fissures? If not, no active treatment is required.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Orange juice will be a good source of Vitamin C (and Vitamin D, if fortified). In addition, you will need Vitamin B Complex and Zinc supplementation.

2. Besides vitamin deficiencies, stress, acid reflux, indigestion, a post nasal drip / sinusitis, low hemoglobin and dehydration will have to be managed.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.
