What Causes Scarring Of The Lung Tissues?

Posted on Thu, 8 Jun 2017
Question: Hello dear Dr I would like to get some clarification on the matter I faced recently while passing compulsory medical fitness checkup for employment Visa in United Arab emirates. It looks like that I passed the blood test against any type of AIDSHIV or hepatitis but I failed chest x-ray as I got the call From medical center asking to undergo for another set of tests for tuberculosis. I visited medical centre where I gave another blood sample and sputum tests and asked the doctor over there about the reason I called for the second test and the answer was very short, they said I have scar on my lung... that was a scary news for me.
For the moment I am still waiting for test results and going crazy...
Nobody from my family never had any tuberculosis or cancer, I don't have any history of it.
I had my previous chest x-ray is done in 2012 in France and in 2014 in Australia for the same reason of getting the work permits and all was absolutely clear. Since that time I did not have any issues with my lungs and only thing happened to me that was quite long sickness period from beginning of December to the end of December 2016 when I was coughing and that was quite wet cough which has been healed itself and field conditions I was in did not allow me to visit doctors. While this I did not have fever.
Would it be possible that scar has appeared as a result of sickness I had four month ago?

Brief Answer:
Yes, that illness can be the cause for this Scar lesion.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HealthcareMagic.
I can understand your concern.

There are many causes for Scar lesion in lung

The common ones are-
1. Previous lung infection (tuberculosis or pneumonia)
2. Previous lung injury
3. Smoking
4. Drug induced
5. Idiopathic (without any cause)
Amongst all these, most common cause is the 1st one.

Lung infection sometimes can heal on its own without antibiotics and other drugs and fever can also be absent sometimes.

So you might have had lung infection in December 2016 which was healed by its own and caused Scar tissue.

You had cough with expectoration (wet cough). And these are common symptoms of lung infection.
So your current Scar on chest X-ray might be due to the lung infection in December 2016.

Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.

Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Hi Doctor, thank you for your reply. Just to mention that Inwas suffering from gastritis and had to undergo for some blood, enzyme and stool tests. While having no blood in stool, and only issue found that I have wrong balance of bacteria in my colon ( found that I have Staphylococcus aureus both in colon and throat) I also had blood results showing only minor deviations, both in Feb and May of this year. I attached last just to let you see it (its in different language but I beleive you can read acronyms) and would like to ask a follow up question. Would i get any blood result normal if there is a serious lung issues existed?

Brief Answer:
This report is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I have gone through the report you have attached.
This blood report is normal.
Usually serious lung infection reflects in blood report as increased WBC count.
But it is not always true. Sometimes, even with lung infection, blood reports are normal.
Chest x ray and CT scan are abnormal in lung infection.
So please let me know if you had any chest x ray done or not.
Also let me know if you are smoker or not.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Hi Doctor, my last x ray done a few days back in UAE, where I am applying for work permit. Scan is not handed to me by medical centre which is normal for this process of pre employment screening. They claim that they observed scar on my lung and asked me number of questions whether I had TB in the past or have it in my family. The answer is no as I have never had any. I am quite experienced business person and had similar x rays done back in France in 2012 and 2013, also in Australia in 2014 and all was clear. Yes I smoked for 10 years but reduced it to a few for last 4 years

In my opinion, you should immediately quit smoking.
And in your case PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) and CT scan of thorax should be done.
Please let me know if these investigations are done or not.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
