Colon

What is Colon?

This is one of the last parts of your Digestive System. It has alot of different things to do, but MAINLY it EXTRACTS water and salts from the food that has been digested and STORES the remaining waste until you can find a good place to get rid of it (by going to the bathroom). The colon is present in the lower part of the abdomen and when ill can give you symptoms of intermittent colicky abd pain

Questions and answers on "Colon"

The doctor found a small tumor in my lower colon . He took several biopsies. He said that part of my lower colon on the right side would have to removed. Is there a high risk for that kind of surgery?. He couldn t get all of the polyp because there was danger of perforating my colon. What would be the length of the hospital stay? pg

To be effective in the colon I understand Pentasa must be a delayed release formula so it doesn't get absorbed before it gets to the colon. There are capsules CR . There are also tablets..... but are the tablets also CR such that the mesalamine reaches the colon while still potent? (The capsules are so expensive and the tablets appear to be much less expensive.)
Thank you.

doctor1 MD

Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

Tablet pentasa is rather half released in small intestine and another half in colon. And if you require it to be effective in colon then take tab mesalamine like mesacol or coolgut which is released in colon only.

I hope...

My husband went to the doctor 2 days ago for vomitting and diarrea and was told he has a stomach bug. Since then, he has had a lot of blood in stools and blood even ran down his leg from his rectum as he was standing in the kitchen cooking tonight. Earlier today, he had a white stool. He has a history of blood in his stools. he had a colonoscopy approx 5 years ago when he was told the blood was from stress & internal hemerroids. The problem seemed to get better for a while, but he has been in Honduras for the past 2 years where he has been under A LOT of stress. He has had a lot of problems with vomitting and diarrea and blood in his stools from time to time. The doctors always tell him it is a stomach bug and that the blood is from stress. He had a blood panel done earlier this year where they checked his organs and everything was fine. He is worried because his grandfather died from colon cancer and his aunt died from a bad liver . With the current situation - could the bleeding possibly be caused by the diarrea aggravating the hemmoroids? He cannot get to a hospital until tomorrow morning.

doctor1 MD

Hi,
stress ulcer in stomach can cause bleeding but this color should be black. as you have mentioned massive blood loss from anal orifice hemorrhoides are possible diagnosis. But at this age malignancy can not be ruled out. Your husband has strong family history also. It will be better to repeat...

I just had a partial colectomy about 4 weeks ago. About 6 months prior to the surgery I wasnt able to eat normally I threw up just about everything and I slowly had to take out different foods out of my diet until I wasnt able to eat anything but Ensure for the last month until the surgery. Now that I have had my surgery I havent been able to eat without awful pain. My surgeon says I should be eating normally by now but it causes way to much pain. So I have been eating tiny portions of super soft food, and it still causes some pain. Do you have any idea whats going on? Please help im desperate im loosing so much weight im 5 6\

doctor1 MD

Hello.
Welcome to HealthcareMagic forum.
After surgery taking food should not be so painful. only the surgeon who operated you can give you some idea of the cause.Slowly you will become habituated to the normal diet. Keep trying.

I have been suffering with too many bowel movements for some time. I have had a large bowel procedure which showed diveritular disease. I have since had a small bowel meal and await results. I am still bleeding periodically from the back passage, bright red blood and have what feels like a large protrusion below my chest but above my belly button which is evident when getting out of bed.

My partner has been diagnosed with inflammation of the bowel and he is awaiting a colonoscopy and is naturally very anxious about this. He missed his first appointment and has had to start the entire and lengthy referral procedure again. My concern with his condition is that his stools smell almost like burning rubber. He is extremely active, very slender at 6 4 and under 11 stone and finds it very difficult to put on or keep on any weight. He has constant loose stools and is in constant pain and discomfort. What kind of condition could we be looking at? Should we prepare for anything very serious?
