Question: Hi, my nose is swollen and sore inside and out . Feels like bad sinuitis but never have had swelling before. Severe headache, sore outer ears, feeling shivery. Ent doc examined my nose last week, it was clear, but ct scan showed narrowing of left nostril. This is the side that is sorest. Had a septeoplast years ago. Last time I had sinuitis i was in hospital getting antibiotics by iv. Upper lip feels swollen and tingles in it and top of nose. Also my throat and all the way down to my lungs feel sore and irritated and have trouble swallowing. I also have severe pain from costochronditis which makes breathing sore. Can you get chronditis in your nose. I suffer from numerous allergies, including dust mites, corn, grass, alcohol and cannot tolerate chemicals like detergents, shampoo, soap, perfume etc. Thank you, XXXXXXX

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Refer back to your physician to rule out drug induced nasal congestion and tremors due to Serequel (Quetiapine).

2. Get a routine blood test to rule out low White Blood Cell counts (drug induced or infection) which may lower your immunity.

3. If an infection is confirmed, get nasal and throat swabs sent for bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity. Meanwhile request your physician for medication for a URTI (Upper Respiratory Tract Infection) including a broad spectrum antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic medication, medicated gargles and steam inhalation.

4. Get a plain Sinus CT Scan after you feel better and upload the images here. It will reveal any sinusitis and the post operative changes in the nose and sinuses. Later, as steroid nasal spray may help control your allergies.

5. Chondritis of the nasal cartilages may occur and will require medication, preferably IV.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thank you for your advice. I woke up this morning with all of the symptoms of flu. My nose and throat are not congested, but totally irritated. Went to my family doctor lwho knew nothing about serequel causing nasal problems and was not interested. I know that is has anti histamine properties and thats why it dries out your nose.. Gave me a script for sinuitis, pinamox,
and told me I had the flu. Others in the house are dosed too but they are able to blow their nose, mine is not blocked but swollen and sore. I also have pain and irritation all at the back of my throat going down wind pipe into lungs. Doctor said chest sounded rough whatever that means. I have chills, pain in joints and muscles and cannot sleep because of pain and irritation in nose and throat. Could this be a reaction to serequel, I looked it up on internet and it says if you have chills and tremors and difficulty breathing you should notify your doctor immediately. I wonder if I am having an allergic reaction to serequel or all the other allergies I have as well as having the flu. Between my nose and upper lip is tingling and my upper lip feels swollen. I feel that all the coughing I am doing is because my throat is so irritated. Suffer from dry eyes also and dry mouth and rheumatologist did blood tests for sjorgens syndrome. Have alot of dental decay fro
m dry mouth and gums are very irritated wgere I got teeeth out months ago. Pain never went
away. The doctor didnt even examine my nose to see the sores that are inside it. Maybe I need steroids? Thank you. XXXXXXX Byrne bought a cough bottle but cant use it as allergic to alcohol. Also parcametol I am taking contains maize starch and I am allergic to corn. Finally the ent specialist sprayed an anaesthetic up my nose before he put up a tube and my symptoms in nose have been worse since then.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. You will require a General Medicine Specialist's opinion to differentiate between between flu, allergy and Serequel, especially as you should not suddenly stop such medication. Flu would be accompanied by high fever, hence it seems to be an allergy. Blood tests as mentioned earlier, will help.

2. Any sinusitis medication containing anti-allergy drugs will further dry the nose and throat. This is less likely to be Sjogrens Syndrome.

3. The dental decay may also be due to acid reflux. the pain may be due to the dryness. Try frequent intake of water, artificial saliva (Aquet) or chewing sugar free gum.

4. The side-effects of the anesthetic spray will not last more than half a day.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Hi, my final question. I am feeling no better. I have awful irritation in my nose sunuises throat and stabbing pain in my lungs. When I come across an irritant such as when my son comes into the room I get the smell of aftershave, deodrant of him, my nose and throat get more irritated and the stabbing pain in my lungs especially the right one gets worse. The dog has just been washed and the smell if his wet hair and shampoo is making me worse. I am coughing, pain and bluriness in my eyes and have s headache and dizziness. I have small bumps on my skin that are sore and generally feel very well. breathing out takes longer than breathing in and is painful. My skin is very thin especially over my hands and I have nodules on some if my fingers and toes. Could I have sacroditis as I feel my immune system is not right and I feel I have inflammation.
I asked my doctor if allergies are causing my problem and she said no. I get full of anxiety when odours or foods cause all these reactions and have panic attacks. I also can't stand the smell of detergent of clothes when they are washed. I thought it was the fragrance that was causing the problem but even when I got the fragrance free one I still had the same reaction. I will not go into my sons bedroom because it stinks of damp musty clothes. The house is damp and mould and I have to have a window open which makes me feel claustrophobic. I had bloods recently for allergies. The last one in 1998 showed a total blood serum ice level of 200 but I am sure it has changed since them. do you thing chemical allergies could be causing my problems and do they affect the centrol system. There had to be some reason why I suffer from severe anxiety. I know serequel lowers dopamine levels and people who have fibromyalgia have low dopamine levels do this is why I have so much pain. Sorry about this being do long but I am fed up with my doctor not listening to mem

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The treatment plan should be based on first treating any flu like infection followed by treatment of any allergy after a week to ten days.

2. You have to discontinue use and exposure to any perfumes, aftershaves, shampoo and detergents that cause irritation. Avoidance is the best treatment for allergy.

3. You need a specialist to gradually discontinue the Serequel and add the medication as discussed previously.

4. A skin biopsy of the nodules/lesions will help rule out any chronic process such as sarcoidosis.

5. Anxiolytics may be added under supervision.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
