Difficulty breathing

What is Difficulty breathing?

Respiratory distress is difficulty in breathing, and the psychological experience associated with such difficulty, even if there is no physiological basis for experiencing such distress. The physical presentation of respiratory distress is generally referred to as labored breathing, while the sensation of respiratory distress is called shortness of breath or dyspnea.

Respiratory distress occurs in connection with various physical ailments, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, a serious reaction to various forms of injuries to the lung, and infant respiratory distress syndrome, a syndrome in premature infants caused by developmental insufficiency of surfactant production and structural immaturity in the lungs.

Questions and answers on "Difficulty breathing"

Today at night I woke up with a chest pain, it was hard to breath, called ambulance. In emergancy I gad x-ray cat scan and blood tests. Heart and lungs are OK. I wanted to stay in the hospital but was relesed with the instruction to see my GP, there is a suspicion of pericardis (EKG). I can't breath deeply, have a pain when bent down, the pain however is managable, non if I do not breath deep or bent down. Otherwise I am fine for 68 years old. Looked on the net, Pericardis seems fit my symptoms. Questions: 1 - should I be hospitalised, 2 - if not what is the best treatment, 3 - how to find is it viral or not (tomorrow I will see my GP)
Thanks
Michael

Dear Sir
Thanks for your query.
Pain of pericarditis may increase on deep breath or coughing but usually gets better by bending forward and increases on lying flat.
1. The decision of hospitalization depends upon a number of factors like cause for pericarditis, associated pericardial effusion,...

I am experiencing difficulty taking a deep breath and I feel it in my lower neck and between the shoulder blades. It is not too constant and is accompanied with a slight headache. No other symptoms, particularly no cold symptoms.

It started last night while on the treadmill and was minor until I woke up and felt bad. Now that I am trying to relax, it is a minor pain, but still can be felt with a deep breath.

Could it be anxiety and stress?

doctor1 MD

hi, it appears to be due to cervical spondylosis, appearent by the treadmill , it may come down by taking rest for few days, If it recurs in near future you can consult your doctor, for diagnosis and treatment. It also can be due to gastric hyperacidity, anxiety or tension. Thank you.

Hello, recently I went to urgent care with chest pain and periodically needing to take a deep breath. I really thought I would be going in for stress . They did a CT scan and they said they found a small shadow that they believed was a small clot. They had me go th er where they had me stay over night, my vent scan came back with low probability, the sonos on my legs found no clots, I have since been home and chest pain comes and goes and I really only have to take a deep breath when I am getting more stressed over this. It has been 3 days and I am still waiting results on the d dimer. I have also spent a lot of money on a months worth of blood thinners for the posibility it could come back negative. I am also a perfectly health 31 yr old female, non smoker, active, good shape, only had a laproscopic appendectomy last month. I am just not sure where to go from here because I am doubting my drs now

Its a simple Reflux disease with esophageal spasms. Talk to your doctor about it. Don't lie down after meals for atleast 2 hours.

hello. it is likely that the infection may be spreading to your wind pipe and chest, please meet your doctor as you may have to change your antibiotics and maybe start a few more drugs. meanwhile start steam inhalation, that will help. thanks

How come when I cough , I feel like I have an itch? It s driving me crazy. I ve been sick for about 3 days now, and idk if it s a small cold or something serious. But this morning I woke up with it kinda hard to breath because I had a lot of mucus in my chest or wherever, so I had to cough to clear it up. Just wondering if the coughing and getting itching sensation is tied to any of that.

doctor1 MD

hi..
you have sore throat, associated with itching, cough with expectoration..
initially probably you had acute pharyngitis which has gone for lower respiratory tract infection..
see an ENT surgeon for the examination, and swab test..
you need to put on antibiotics, analgesics, losenzes,...

Hi, I am 23 years old student, weight 43kg, high 154sm. Since i went to college(3 years), i felt some palpitations, first after some activity, and then for no reason, even when i was just sitting. Last years i made some tests, ECG showed normal rhythm, but 125bpm, and the echo and TSH were normal. Sometimes, if I have some worries or sth, i feel like i can not fill myself with air, like sth stops me in taking a deep breath, so i think anxiety cause that all, but it's not normal for me that my heart rate is never below 100bpm. Also, i can feel the beating in abdominal aorta, and with my 43kg it's not difficult to notice it without touching. Just 10 minutes ago i had one of those episodes (mentioning that these 2 days i am i little tired), so i checked the blood presure, it was 130/80, which i think is another problem.
Any thoughts? Last year the doctor said it's all about emotions, but i can't stop to think about that, especially when i feel like today, like my heart is gonna fly away.

doctor1 MD

hello,
thank you for using health care magic and your question,

well your thyroid level is normal so it can not be because of thyroid.

second possibility can be cardiac arrythamia but your ECG was normal so this possibility is also ruled out

130/80 bp is not a big trouble.. normal is 120/80 and...

Several months ago I noticed it was uncomfortable for me to breathe and noticed a knot on my spine at lung level. I started losing feeling in my arms and hands and feeling tingly, the pain was awful. At the same time, I notice if I was laying flat and tried to sit up I had this horrendous pain in my neck and felt paralyzed. I was also limited in my range of motion in my neck; turning to the right, holding phone on right side, all caused significant pain and difficulty to return to normal position. Over the months I have felt this knot move up my spine, all the same symptioms, now it feels as though it is behine my shoulder blade; same painful sypmtoms, neck, arms, hands. I have no answers. Can you guide me?

doctor1 MD

hi
thanks for Writing to HCM,

your problem is surely very painful and bothering you a lot but you didn't mentioned any medical help/ treatment taken for it till now.
The knot (or lump) is a major concern here. It has to be well diagnosed first before starting any kind of treatment.
A X-ray spine...
