Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: I just had the 'flu' this past week, variety of symptoms, severe chills, fever, joint pain, nausea with dry heaves, every day there was another symptom as the previous ones dissipated. 6 days into it, I woke up one morning with swelling to both hands, fingers with terrible pain in hands, wrists, today the pain is so bad along with swelling I couldn't open my door. Other joints painful, shoulder, knees, also terrible headache. I dont think it's the flu anymore. Could the flu have triggered some kind of immune problem and what do I do from here?

Brief Answer:
seems to be viral fever with arthritis.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having fever with swelling of limbs.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be viral fever with arthritis.

Some viral fevers are self limiting (doesn't require antibiotics and investigations. some may show complications (pneumonia or arthritis).

I suggest you to consult a physician, as you may require steroids, pain killers and antibiotics depending on the blood investigations (complete hemogram to check white blood count, platelet count) liver function tests and electrolytes. Depending on the findings, treatment can be started.

Mean time, take paracetamol dosed 650mg two to three times daily (brufen can cause altered renal parameters).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
