default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: I have anemia. Have had is constantly for 5 almost 6 year now. Im being told it is due to Malformation from R and Y Bariatric Surgery. However that was over 8 years ago and I have had it my entire life on and off just not constantly like now. my endoscopy says no bleeding but biliary and sphincter of odie. How much and how often should my iron infusions be? My ferritin is and stays around 4 to 6 . I just received 250 mg and will get another in a week? I have detailed metabolic panels and can upload . I have constant problems with other values for blood work for last 10 years and can upload them.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

From the information you have provided it does appear that you have significant iron deficiency anemia. The main question to ask is where your body is losing iron. I understand you have had endoscopy to look for possible sources but there must be some other issue going on which is causing you to lose iron and blood.

your doctors may suggest doing some type of capsule endoscopy which would look for blood loss within the small intestines. I agree with iron supplementation and you may need to continue iron supplementation until your ferritin levels can be restored.

it is possible that your prior surgery is causing a problem with appropriate absorption which may end up causing you to be dependent on periodic iron infusions.

If you have a copy of a recent blood count this might be useful for review.

Thanks again for sending your question and I look forward to continuing to discuss your healthcare concerned with you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
