Is Delayed Periods Normal After Taking ContraPill-Kit?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: My wife's mensuration cycle is 26 days on average. Her last period started on 28-Mar-16.

We had sex without protection on 05-Apr-16 . We don't want baby at this stage, so I ensured I pulled out few seconds before ejaculation. Still to be on safer side she consumed ContraPill-Kit ( Mifepristone - 1 No + Misoprostol - 4 Nos ). Mifepristone 200 mg pill was consumed within 6 hours of relationship. Then after 48 hours Misoprostol 200mg 2 pills were consumed and in the next 24 hours another 2 Misoprostol 200mg 2 pills were consumed. She had severe stomach pain after taking Misoprostol tablets. For 2 days she had vaginal discharge of some white colour fluid. There were no bleeding.

For the past couple of days, she vomits frequently and feels very tired, sleeps well in day time too and feels dizzy at times.

Till now ( 23-Apr-16 ) she didn't get periods. Usually couple of days prior to periods she would get symptoms like pain in chest, stomach, legs. But this time she says she don't have any such symptoms. We are worried.

Is there any chances that she might have got pregnant?

Is it possible that the period got extended because of the use of ContraPill-Kit?

Should we wait for some more days before getting panic? If so how many more days should we wait?

Brief Answer:
Urine pregnancy test advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir, thanks for trusting health care magic.
This is all related to kit intake which was indeed a bad decision.
Just do a urine pregnancy test and tell me the result.
Will decide further management according to the test result
All the best

Doctor,

Thank You for your response. I saw some of your answers to other people and was impressed.

Your answer in our case is very generic. You are a specialist so it may be a normal thing for you. But we are layman and so worried much. May I request you kindly answer my questions in a very detailed manner point wise.

1) Kindly read my previous post, specifically have a look at the dates mentioned. Till now ( 24-Apr-16 ) she didn't get periods. Usually couple of days prior to periods she would get symptoms like pain in chest, stomach, legs. But this time she says she doesn't have any such symptoms. We are worried. Should we wait for some more days before getting panic? If so how many more days should we wait?

2) I have pulled out few seconds before ejaculation. Still to be safer she consumed ContraPill-Kit ( Mifepristone - 1 No + Misoprostol - 4 Nos ). Is there any chances that she might have got pregnant even after these?

3) You said " This is all related to kit intake which was indeed a bad decision. ". Why do you say so? Is it not safe? Is this the reason for not getting periods? Can Contrapill-kit delay periods? If yes than normally how many days delay will be there?

4) You said " Just do a urine pregnancy test and tell me the result. ". Kindly have a look at the dates mentioned. Is this the right time to do it now? Or when should we do?

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy test must

Detailed Answer:
Yes dear, this is the ripe time did doing the test as test is positive in case there is pregnancy after 14-16 days of sexual intercourse.
Contrapill kit is an abortion pill and not an emergency pill so it was not indicated at that time and will just cause delay in periods (if at all) and will not prevent from pregnancy as desired at that time.
Pulling out was a good decision indeed but that never suffices as a contraceptive method and thus should use a condom or ask her to take pills regularly as you guys are not ready for pregnancy yet.
If was her mid cycle and practically there was no contraception so despite of all the symptoms she had st that time she can still be pregnant.
Symotoms of upcoming periods are absent so she definitely needs to test for pregnancy.

Thank You Doctor for the reply.

Today ( 26-Apr-16) early Morning first thing we did urine pregnancy test. It came negative.

Once again have a look at the dates. Her last period started on 28-Mar-16. We are planning to do another urine test by 01-May-16.

Should we go for pregnancy check ultra sound scanning? If so what is the earliest date we can go for scan to confirm conceived or not?

Thank You.

Brief Answer:
BHCG test advised

Detailed Answer:
Take bHCG blood test which will confirm the pregnancy status accurately.
Ultrasound will need another 2 weeks for showing pregnancy if at all present.

Once again I request you to have a look at the dates. Her last period started on 28-Mar-16. We had unprotected sex on 5-Apr-16. There after no sex between us.

As suggested by you, on 2-May-16 we did bHCG the result was <0.1 mIU/ml ( report attached )

We visited a Gynacologist with the bHCG test result. She was not ready to believe bHCG test. You said bHCG is accurate. How accurate is bHCG? Is there chances that bHCG test might have shown wrong results? Do you advise one more bHCG test?

The Gynacologist gave Neogest 100mg - 3 pills to bring periods. My wife consumed the tablets on 7,8,9th May but still no periods.

So far we did 3 urine strip tests. 1st was negative. 2nd test was initially negative and after 3 hours we saw one more very very faint pink line. So we repeated the test on some other day and that test too was negative.

The Gynacologist suggested ultra sound scan. We did the same on 12-May-16. The scan result was "Polycystic Appearing Ovaries". ( Scan report is attached herewith ). They could not see gestational sack too. Now they are not confirming pregnancy but they said incase there is no period till 25-May-16, then they advised to take another scan on 26th-May to confirm whether pregnant or not.

Given the above test results ( urine, bHCG, scan ) what do you think? Is there chances that my wife is pregnant? What should we do next?

Since we do not expect baby at this time, we want to terminate as early as possible without D&C. Till how long can we abort using Tablets & Injections without any Dilation and curettage procedure.

Kindly answer each question in detail.

Thank You.

Brief Answer:
Tablet norethisterone advised

Detailed Answer:
I can see your anxiety as you have already gone through a lot so far.
In my opinion she is not at all pregnant and im pretty sure about it.
no need to have any other ultrasound or pregnancy test at all.
Just take tablet norethisterone 5 mg three times a day for 4 days and on leaving the tablet you will get periods in 3-5 days for sure.
You can very well relax and then get back to me anytime for any doubt or symptoms.
In general it is very common to have deranged periods after emergency pills and abortion pills so no need to worry about future menstrual or reproductive abnormalities

Doctor,

Thank You for the reply.

1) My wife consumed "Neogest-100mg" 2 each on 7,8,&9th May. That was also given to regulate periods. The Gynacologist told that it may take 10 days for the periods to come, she told to wait upto 26th-May. Is it safe to take "Norethisterone-5mg" at this stage? Or should we wait?

2) Incase my wife is pregnant is it safe to consume "Norethisterone-5mg". What will happen in case she is pregnant and consumed "Norethisterone-5mg"?

3) I hope you have seen scan report & all 3 scan images and also bHCG test result and then came to conclusion that she is not pregnant. Did you see all 5 images we attached?

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Take it as advised

Detailed Answer:
Yes dear, I have seen the images and know the report and whole history dear.
Norethisterone will bring periods for sure in her case and there is negligible chance of pregnancy.
It is not safe in pregnancy if taken for a long time but the dose and duration of pills given to you will not cause any problems in pregnancy if at all there

Doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Earlier she used to have regular periods ( about 25 days ), almost never missed or delayed. Gynacologist said my wife has PCOD ( Polycystic Appearing Ovaries). Generally if PCOD is there, then there will be problems for periods. But she didn't had such problems earlier. Is it possible that because periods missed just this one time PCOD formed?

In case there is PCOD will the tablet "Norethisterone" prescribed by you can bring periods?

If period comes this time, will PCOD still persist or it will go away?

Kindly answer all our questions in detail.

Thank You
doctor
Answered by Dr. Manisha Jain (8 hours later)
Brief Answer:
PCOD is a chronic problem

Detailed Answer:
PCOD is an endocrine disorder which causes cycle problems in around 50-70% of affected population and that too may vary according to the severity of disease.
Just one cycle disruption will not lead to new onset PCOD and it is just an incidental finding which came into notice because you got an ultrasound.
She can have norethisterone and will have periods after leaving it without any effect on PCOD status or severity.
PCOD persists for life and cannot be treated and can only be just managed by managing symptoms.
Only disease modifying thing in PCOD is weight reduction and an active life style.
She should not gain weight and rather try to lose some in case she is overweight.
Avoid emergency pill intake in future and rather take oral pills for contraception regularly as they will keep a check on PCOD too.
In case you have any questions in future also please feel free to ask.

Brief Answer:
Will not recur most likely

Detailed Answer:
You are most welcome dear.
Most likely there won't be any disturbance with periods.
In less 5% of patients this disturbance persists for 2-3 months and gets resolved so all in all nothing much to worry.
If you want to ask a cancer specialist then you can tag your query as "for breast cancer specialist only" or alternatively your can call on customer care numbers of health care magic team and You will directed to that directly.

Doctor,

Thank You for the reply.

Usually my wife's periods lasts for three days. This time my wife's periods stopped in two days itself. And also the quantity of discharge is about 30% only as compared to her regular periods. Is it alarming? Will it have any effects on future periods? What might have cause this? Do you suggest any medicines and or food control measures?

Thank You

Answered by Dr. Manisha Jain (10 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
It is common to have less periods after withdrawal intake.
Nothing to worry and nothing alarming in it.
Ask her to have good amount of milk, salads and fresh fruits.
These will detoxify her body and in general good for wellbeing of the body.
Take care
