Brief Answer:
Amygdala damage

Detailed Answer:
Than you for contacting HCM with your health care questions

You are wondering if the amygdala can be repaired after a stroke. Unfortunately the amygdala is made of nerve tissue and once destroyed or damage there is no way to repair the area. But the brain is a very amazing thing in that the area maybe damaged but new pathways can still be made to overcome the damage.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

I didn't have a stroke, but I feel repeated anxiety has impaired it. My heart doesn't pound like it used to when scared. I don't have the same response as I used to. It all started after having s milkshake that spiked my glucose. I feel like all this stress impaired its functioning?

Brief Answer:
no damage

Detailed Answer:
In your case there will not be any actual damage to your amygdala. What I would recommend is that you try relaxation exercises or meditation. This will help relearn your emotional status and allow you to better control the anxiety. Using medications like valium or ativan may help but will blunt your own bodies ability to heal and correct the problem.

I would also recommend try reading a book called teh anxiety and phobia handbook by Dr. Bourne. It may help give you tools to help with your anxiety without medication

Ok and how would you know if you had damage to your frontal lobes? What are the symptoms? What if the MRI shows no damage? Can prolonged stress damage it? Can there still be damage to the way it functions?

Brief Answer:
no damage

Detailed Answer:
The only way to actually cause damage to your brain is through physical or chemical trauma. Stress will not actually cause brain injury.

Stress though can cause emotional trauma and psychological damage but these are not seen on MRIs or CT scans. The best treatment for psychological damage is thought counseling and therapy. Medications can help with depression, anxiety and psychosis.
