My mother is 65 yrs old, she had a stroke back in January of this year. Before that for a good year or more she was constantly getting angry and yelling and screaming. To voices she hears and at time visiually see these people who are not there. She would not go to the doctor before January when she had her stroke but she is now seeing a general doctor but the problem with that is that she will not tell him about these voices she hears. When she was in the hospital the norologist did 2 spinal taps on her which her colestrol and white blood cells were off the charts in the 200's!! Well the norologist went on vacation and within a week my mother was sent home unable to walk from the stroke and now since then is once again walking but seems to drag her right leg a little at times. My question to you is what can be causing my mother to suffer from hearing these voices and getting angry, calm, sad, or crying Roller Coaster Ride of Emotions. She says she knows that something isn't right on the back inside of her head. I will tell you more as we speak as I am hoping this site is real.

My mom age 65 had a stroke last week. I am not sure if its a stroke or TIA etc. Her left arm and leg is affected. Her face is all good and also she can swallow well. It only her left arm and left leg. CT scan did not show any clot or anything. We have started with physiotherapy but want to know what are the chances of second stroke or what medical treatment should be given to her.

doctor1 MD

If the symptoms persist it certainly is a stroke not TIA. TIA stands for transient ischemic attack, transient meaning symptoms disappear inside an hour.
At times CT might miss the lesion especially if performed inside the first 12 hours or if stroke is in certain brain areas. An MRI would be...

My mother had a stroke today. She seems fine now. Is everything OK? She went for an MRI, but no results have come back yet. She had a stroke at about 3:30 pm today and when I went to the hospital about 3 hours later, she was talking and moving normally. My sisters said her whole left side was paralyzed for an hour and her right side of her face was drooping. Is she going to be OK? The reason for her stroke was most likely the catherization she went for a few hours before (she was supposed to get open heart surgery Thursday, which is tomorrow, but no more because this stroke)

Does having a stroke at a young age shorten your life? My son who is now 36 years old suffered a stroke last year which left him with no movement in his left arm and he has to use a cane to walk with. He seems very tired al the time even though this happened in May of 2011. He also had to have his aortic valve replaced.

doctor1 MD

it depends upon zeal of patient, however stroke reduces the quality of life if occured in young age.

his tired may be due to aortic valve replacement, i suggest to meet an occupational therapist, he will guide you well and teach how to cope up with sittuations

had the first sizure stroke in 1988 when I was 14 years old. Despite under medication I was getting stroke every after 6 months. Later I took tab Zen Retard 400mg in 1997 prescribed by a neuro surgen. I had been taking that medicine till 2002. Then the dose was reduced to 200mg till 2005. Then the doctor asked me to stop the medicine. But 3 months after stopping the medicine, I had a stoke again. The doctor asked me continue the same 200mg medicine again. In 2008 I stopped the medicine, But 3 months later I had a stroke again. The EEG report says I have no problem in the functioning of my brain. The doctor prescribed me Lonazep 2mg. I had been taking the medicine, but in Jan 2010 I had a stroke, ofcorse very mild in nature, I did not make any noise, I was unconscious for 5 minutes or so and the aftermath of the stroke was not so tiring as it used to be earlier. I contacted the doctor over phone, I was suggested to take additional 1mg of Lonazep in the morning. I learned Lonazep has got very bad side effects even I feel very tired and heavy muscular pain in the morning when I getup in the morning. If I skip the medicine some day then I feel fresh in the morning. Now I got married. Please advice what medicine should I take. Consuming so much of medicines over the years will have any problem in my married life, I mean to my spouse or to the children in future. Because of this I have not yet planned for the child as of yet. Kindly advice me what should I do? can I be fully cured? I emphasize that I get stroke only when I get up from sleep all of sudden

doctor1 MD

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM! I read your question carefully and understand your concern.

I think that the episodes that you call "troke" are just epileptic seizures. Zen Retard is an antiepileptic drug. Lonazep too.

Lonazep ( Clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine, and as such, it induces muscular...

my 22 yr. old son has been experiencing high blood pressure which according to charts he is in stage 1 hypertension. The latest reading was 151 over 93. The last 2 weeks he s experienced something not right in his upper left shoulder/chest area. (uncomfortable or light pain) He did see his doctor (a family physician) and had a EKG done. His doctor stated that he has some constriction going on therefore the blood flows back. she put him on some blood pressure pills (I don t recall the name) to calm the vessels. Our history is as follows: His great grandfather died of a heart attack at age 49, his great uncle who was in his sixties died of a heart attack, his grandmother had Chronic kidney disease in her fifties (she had to go on dialyis) and she did have a stroke. I am the mother and also have Kidney disease like my mother. I am concerned about my son. My son has to go back in two weeks to have some blood work done. I m just wondering if this is enough testing. Could there be a blockage? Should he see a cardiologist?
