Can Turmeric Be In My Diet When Diagnosed With Stage-1 Renal Disease?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Feb 2017
Question: I have beginning (stage one) renal disease due to Metiformin. My personal MD took away my 800 mg motrin twice a day and now I am on 500mg Tylenol five time a day. This just is not working and I would like to add Tumeric to my medications, but am concerned if this will interfere with current meds which are: 10mg time released glipizide twice a day, Welcol 2 tablets twice a day and Onglyza 5mg once a day. Will the turmeric interfere with any of these and when is the best time to take it?

Brief Answer:
Turmeric has immeasurable positive effects on your health.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, Welcome to HCM,
I have gone through your question and understood your concern.

Turmeric Contains Bioactive Compounds With Powerful Medicinal Properties. It contains the chemical curcumin. Curcumin and other chemicals in turmeric might decrease swelling (inflammation). Because of this, turmeric might be beneficial for treating conditions that involve inflammation.

Turmeric Dramatically Increases The Antioxidant Capacity of the body, reduce blood pressure and inflammation to preventing Alzheimer’s and can be used for the treatment of depression.

Turmeric is fat-soluble. For this reason, if you want to optimize its absorption, you must take it with a bit of fat. For example:Sprinkle some on an avocado ;Dissolve it in a tablespoon of coconut oil before adding it to a smoothie or Stir it into olive oil and then toss in fresh vegetables.

1. It is best to take turmeric at bedtime. The reason in the literature is still not very clear but they seem to be more effective when taken at night.

2. It is not a problem to use turmeric with Welchol and Onglyza. There are not known interactions between these drugs and turmeric.

But for the glipizide and turmeric you should be careful.

Taking turmeric may lower blood sugar levels. When it is used together with drugs like glipizide that also reduce blood sugar levels, turmeric may cause blood sugar to get too low-a condition called hypoglycemia.

Signs of blood sugar that is too low may include feeling weak or shaky, having a headache, or being confused or nervous.

So, if you want to take both turmeric and glipizide,it will be necessary to monitor your blood sugar levels more closely and possibly adjust doses of glipizide more frequently than usual.
Be careful:If you experience problems (symptoms of hypoglicemia), you must stop taking turmeric.

Hope I've answered to your questions. If you have other doubts, feel free and ask. I'll e happy to help.

Thank you for using HCM.
Wish you good health.

Thank you, this was VERY helpful. I have ordered turmeric in capsule form and will take two at 11pm when I go to bed. I am not worried about low sugar at night as I am up every 2-3 hours to eliminate all the H2O I drink during the day and I keep a monitor right beside me at night so I can test if I don't feel right. I think the "fat" element at night won't work as I try not to eat after 8pm

This was well worth the $15.00 and I will use you in the future to answer questions.
