Motrin

What is Motrin?

Ibuprofen ( or ; from isobutylphenylpropanoic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) derivative of propionic acid used for relieving pain, helping with fever and reducing inflammation. About 60% of people improve with any given NSAID and it is recommended that if one does not work that another should be tried.

Compared to other NSAIDs it may have fewer side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding. At low doses it does not appear to increase the risk of myocardial infarction; however, at higher doses it may. It may result in worsened asthma.

Like other NSAIDs, it works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are fat-like molecules derived from arachidonic acid, which are involved in mediating inflammation (swelling), pain, and fever. It achieves this effect on prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, an enzyme that is present in various tissues of the body.

It was originally made and patented in 1961, by the research arm of Boots Company led by Stewart Adams and marketed as Brufen. Ibuprofen is now available under a variety of trade names, with the most notable being Advil, Motrin, and Nurofen. It was later marketed, in 1966, as a prescription drug in the United Kingdom, then the United States in 1974. Later in 1983 and 1984, it became the first NSAID (other than aspirin) to be available over the counter (OTC) in these two countries. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a basic health system.

Questions and answers on "Motrin"

My 13 year old has been having stomach pain that has been gradually getting worse for a couple of days now. Been giving her motrin for pain and fever which is slight if any. She can t eat as she feels like she will vomit . Says she is dizzy, and goes from hot to cold constantly. Says it hurts to lie on either side so she sits upright to rest. Trying to avoid ER but almost sounds like what my other teen had not to long ago...torsion cyst . not sure the spelling but sure you will know what I mean. Her stools and urine are normal with no pain and no unusual smells.

My son has a high fever ranging between 101 - 105 degrees. His gums started swelling yesterday and he has a blister on his tongue. I have been alternating tylenol and motrin to keep the fever down. It has been a struggle getting him to drink and he isn't eating very well.....any suggestions would be greatly reccommended. We are out of state and the local ER was no help.....Sincerely, Thank you!

Hello, a fever of 105 F is concerning and I advise you get him admitted and evaluated for the cause of fever as well as start him on antibiotics.
Till you get him to a doctor, continue tylenol for the fever.
Kenacort ointment works very well for blisters in the mouth and it will heal soon,...

My eight year old daughter woke up five days age complaining of sore cervical and inguinal lymph nodes and achiness in her legs. Within 3 hours her fever went from 98.6 to 102.9, and her throat began to hurt. I took her to the pediatrician right away, and her rapid strep test was immediately positive. Omnicef was prescribed, along with tylenol/motrin to reduce pain and fever. She has a long history of strep throat infection, and had tonsils/ adenoids removed almost four years ago. She has had strep throat a few times since the surgery, and antibiotic therapy was effective w/in 24-48 hours to reduce painful throat and fever. This this time her condition is not improving, and is accompanied by a dry cough which seems to be worsening. She also has a painful bump on the roof of her mouth. I am using the tylenol/motrin therapy according to schedule, and giving her the prescribed Omnicef daily. She has had four days of antibiotics now, and the fever is not subsiding. As soon as the meds wear off , her fever spikes back up to 102-103 and the throat pain returns. Could this be a complication of strep that requires further medical attention? I was also wondering if it is possible for a child with a history of strep to be a carrier of the bacteria (always testing positive on rapid strep test)? Thank you for any adivice or suggestions-

it is not streptococcal infection, it is viral infection caused by Epstein Barr virus. drink hot fluids and plenty of liquids. physical rest is advised for 4 weeks. avoid alcohol

My 15 year old daughter is complaining about pain in her lower front teeth and chin. 800 Motrin does not seem to help and neither does ice or heat. The dental X-ray shows nothing, a trip to the doctor where he felt around her jaw and looked in her mouth only shows possible tmj. This has been going on for 48 hrs. And now she has a fever of 100 and slight swelling of lower lip.

doctor1 MD

Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
The pain in the lower incisors and chin region can be because of the gum infection or tooth infection secondary to decay or trauma. Nothing to be panic, consult a good oral physician and get it evaluated. Meanwhile take a course of...

My 2yr old daughter who is 34 lbs and 40 inches has had a on and off again fever for 48 hours which I have been treating with Tylenol and Motrin, just today I noticed she is getting a vaginal discharge of greenish yellow color. She is taking antibiotics for an infection from her foot, medication is clindamycin.

doctor1 MD

Hi.... this does not seem to be related to the clindamycin she is taking. I suggest you to take her to her pediatrician regarding this, as this might require a vaginal swab, Grams stain and culture and sensitivity.

My son has had between a 102 and 103 fever for three days. Now I noticed he has a very red eye. He is 8. Can this be from the fever or is the fever because of the eye, maybe an infection? His fever goes down after using Motrin but goes right back up after a couple hours. How long should I let it go before taking him to the doctor?
