Can Change In Diet Cause Itching On Scalp, Neck And Thoracic Area?

Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Hi. I recently (2.5 months ago) became vegetarian. It's winter now and i got a couple of virus flu that was bad. I got better after one week of rest in bed.

The one week while I have been feeling better I have had my skin, my back, rib cage area, back of my neck, scalp and thoracic area feels like I have crawling skin that is constantly itchy! I'm very constipated and have a Fischer now from pushing. It so painful now to pass stools that I e considered not eating.

I've had bad headaches or migrains as well, that make my face throb with heat.
And my throat is getting sore again.

I'm wondering if it's due to my diet change ?

FYI- I eat lots of veg n fruit, nuts and drink plenty of fresh water.
I sleep well too.
Thank you for your assistance

Brief Answer:
Switching to vegetarian diet is not related skin problems.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I really appreciate your concern.
Switching to vegetarian diet cannot be the cause of crawling and itching sensation you are facing. These type of itching might be due to allergic reaction to some unidentified allergen or some organism. It may be environmental or food borne allergen. Sometimes viral fever may be associated with sore throat and skin rash. I advise you to have anti-allergic medications for itching and tablet naproxen for headache/ migraine.

You have not mentioned the duration of itching and headache. I would like to know for how long you are having itching, whether it is associated with rash & fever, whether you are taking any antibiotics which can be a cause of allergy. Whether headache is associated with rhinitis or not.

Vegetarian diet low in fibers can lead to constipation. Follow these instruction to prevent constipation which is the main cause of anal fissure:
Continue having high fiber diet like fresh fruits and green leaft vegetables. Drink plenty of fluid everyday.
Make regular exercise schedule and strictly follow it.
Try taking stool softeners to make bowel movements less painful. for long term use, consult your physician.
Have sitz bath. Sit in a tub filled with a few inches of warm water for 20 minutes, 2 or 3 times a day. It soothes the torn tissue and helps relax the internal anal sphincter. You can try soothing ointment for fissure.
Dietary modification and sitz bath will be very helpful to you with anal fissure.

Hope I have solved your query. Do not hesitate to ask for further queries.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Antihistaminics & Sitz bath will solve your problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Antihistaminic medication would be very helpful for your rash and itching.

For feeling of slight soreness in throat, I advise you to have lukewarm saline water gargles twice a day.
Sometimes recurrent soreness of throat may occur due to Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you have the reflux problem then measures to reduce reflux will be helpful.

To reduce fissure pain you can apply anesthetic plus low dose steroids combination ointment for maximum 2 weeks. Prevention of the constipation is the best remedy for fissure which can be achieved by regular high fiber diet and Sitz bath. So start having Sitz bath as soon as possible.
