What Causes Nose Bleeding And High Pulse Rate?

A nose bleed with a high (89) pulse rate--should we be concerned? My husband had open heart surgery 12 years ago. He is on blood pressure medication. Tonight he blew his nose and it started bleeding. He checked his blood pressure and it was 118/69 but his pulse was up 89. Usually runs low. Should we be concerned.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your husband who had heart surgery 12 years ago, started nose bleed with normal blood pressure but pulse rate of 89 which is usually low for him.
The most probable reasons can be as follows:
It is possible that he is on anti platelet medicines like Aspirin or Deplat-A and thus can be cause.
Local nasal thinning of mucosa, popping blood vessel which ruptured.
Hence I Would advise you the following:
Rush to ER or nearby hospital for evaluation and nasal endoscopy to see for the exact cause.
Blood tests like Bleeding time, clotting time, prothrombine time and other tests.
Stop anti-platelet medicines.
May need packing the nose if the bleeding is more or not controlled.
Further management as per the findings.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
