I recently had tonsillitis but this now seems to have cleared up but I've been left with a white pus looking circle that looks like it has a whole in it which is above the tonsils on the side of the roof of my mouth. The area around it is still quite red. It is quite painful every so often but seems to soothe if I drink or gargle with cold water. It seems to hurt when eating or talking. Is this just the end of my infection or something else? I have been prescribed penicillin and have been taking it for 5 days of a 7 day prescription.
Hello! I read carefully your query and understand your concern. In the way you describe your throat seems you have strep throat, which is tonsillitis caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus. This diagnosis is confirmed by a throat swab test. The right treatment is an antibiotic and the first line of antibiotics used to treat this infection is Penicillin oral or injectable for at least 10 days.
A full 10 day course must be completed even though patients usually feel better only after two to three days.
The fact that you see the presence of pus in your throat means that the infection isn't cured yet.I suggest to take this treatment for 10 days.
Hope my answer has helped. Take care. Dr.Rovena
