How Should Arteries Blockage With Blood Sugar Fluctuation Be Treated?

My father has diabetes and has been on diaonil for the last 17-18 years or so. Recently, he was diagnosed with blocks in her arteries. right after getting the medication, his blood sugar has been fluctuating and he went into hypo glacemia recently (blood sugar dropped to 32). His blood sugar now varies between 60 and 250 in a few hours. What is the recommendation for him? He is currently in Bhopal and will be coming to Mumbai soon?

You must consult a diabetologist for any changes in medication or initiation of insulin injections, if required for managing diabetes in a better way. Do you use a glucometer device for monitoring blood glucose at home? if you haven't been doing so, I would suggest you to purchase a glucometer and start monitoring his blood sugar at home. Record the readings pre and post meals to alter his diet. Make sure he eats his meals at regular intervals everyday. Having meals on time and avoiding too much gap between meals prevents any fluctuations in blood glucose. Whenever he has hypoglycemia, treat it with 15 gms of glucose or sugar ( 3 tsp of glucose/sugar/3-4 glucose biscuits). Make sure he eats adequately and avoid intake of refined carbohydrates like white bread, white polished rice or maida products including bakery items and sweets.

Ensure he has a healthy diet comprising of fibre rich foods like whole pulses or grams like whole bengal gram or chana, whole grain cereals like dalia, oats and oat bran (good for lowering cholesterol and preventing any spikes in blood glucose levels), whole wheat chapati, brown rice, partly milled rice. Control portion sizes to avoid too high or too low sugar levels. A meal pattern with 3 main meals (breakfast ,lunch and dinner) and 3 in between snacks will be helpful.

Avoid fried, fatty foods like butter ghee or milk cream. Foods which can raise blood sugar significantly are dried fruits, nuts, sweets, oily foods to name a few.

Hope this information will serve you as a guide to manage diabetes in a better way.

Dear sir, i appreciate your concern. blocks in the arteries indicates that he had undergone CABG/angioplasty?? please do consult cardiologist soon...what other medications he is on?? you need to get your father's FBG, lipid profile, microalbuminuria and HbA1c checked. your medications are sufficient for time being if your father is committed for lifestyle changes.. first stay away from all the fast / processed / and fried food stuffs .. divide your meal in to 4-5 parts per day whenever you feel hungry.. add more of fiber rich food stuffs like green leafy vegetables, raw fruits.. (not juices), eat very less of carbohydrates (rice) avoid sugar completely.. take Millets and breads prepared out of it like ragi.. ragi is a very good source of calcium too...do take more of proteins ... like egg white... say no to oils and cholesterol rich food stuffs ... u can take fish (boiled) but chicken (without skin) rarely...sir, based on this you prepare your diet chart and strictly follow it ..Do exercise .. walk at least half an hour to one hour a day ... try and practice yoga and pranayama ... some aasanas are very easy to practice and also beneficial. Quit smoking and reduce your alcohol intake. Moreover, beet root juice (inorganic nitrate), olive leaves, garlic, termeric, tamarind also have proven benefits. if u can follow these (have to!!) you can definitely see difference yourself by the time you have your next blood investigation report in two months ...THANK YOU AND GET BACK TO US WITH FULL DETAILS OF INVESTIGATIONS AND MEDICATIONS
