Having Brown Discharge. Ultrasound Showed Sac Without Baby. Insight On This?

I went to the E.R last night with brown discharge. I was given a ultrasound that showed a sac of 3 weeks and 4 days but no baby was present. My HCG levels came back at 6000. Which made the doctor think there may be something wrong. I should be about 5 weeks 4 days. But according to when I ovulated I should only be 3 weeks 5 days. Any insight in what might be goin on?

Hi and thanks for the query,

The beta HCG levels are compartible with gestational age. there are two main options to be considered at this point n time. First to observe the pregnancy for a week and control again for the beta HCG levels and do a control ulytrasound, or secondly, since the gestational age is too small, to carry out a transvaginal ultrasound, which shall detect and measure the cardaic activity of the fetus at this age , to give us a direct indication on the vitality of the baby.
This examination shall be fundamental in giving an orientation towards a vital fetus, a blighted fetus that might mean a miscarriage or an extra uterine pregnancy.
I suggest you consult your genycologist-obstetrician for these options to be carefully explored. Best regards,

Bain LE, MD.
