Diagnosed With Menorraghia & Pcos. Will Norethisterone Help To Stop Bleeding?
I ve been diagnosed with menorraghia & pcos (pcos when I was 16) I was prescribed tranexamic & mefenamic acid but these are no longer helping with my bleeding (16+ days in a 28 day period) been given northiserone 5mg to be taken 3 times a day for 10 days, are these to stop bleeding? Is it a contraceptive as me and my partner are trying for a baby
Hello
Thanks for your query.
Firstly, you have to consult a proper doctor as this amount and duration of menstrual bleeding is not normal.
It would leave you anemic, not to mention various other problems like endometrial hyperplasia etc.
Norethisterone is given to stop the bleeding.
However, you are not supposed to be planning a family while on norethisterone, as it can have adverse effects on the baby.
YOu can request your doctor for an alternative treatment with other safer progesterone preparations to control your menorrhagia.
However, I feel a complete investigation, ultrasound and a hysteroscopy or D and C is in order as what you describe is definitely not normal or manageable for long with medications.
take care.
