Can I Take HRT To Improve Sex Drive After Undergoing Hysterectomy?

I am 65 years old and had a hysterectomy about 25 years ago with ovaries intact. After about 15 years, I developed symptoms of menopause and my doctor prescribed HRT which I was on for about 10 years successfully. I moved and my new doctor was appalled that I had been on HRT for that long and insisted that I wean myself off of the estrogen, which I did. It has been 3 years since I had any estrogen and now I have absolutely no sex drive whatsoever and intercourse has become very painful. My husband is now advising me of his disappointment and discontent with the fact that I never initiate sex, touch him sexually, or express any interest anymore. I do love my husband and miss the affection we used to have, he is still very sexually active but also very frustrated with me. I would like to know if going back on HRT is an option, at least then I had some desire and still enjoyed sex. I feel like I would rather shorten the quantity of my life if that is what estrogen does, in order to enjoy some quality again. Please give me your opinion regarding returning to HRT. Thank you.

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood your difficulty. I am sorry to say, I totally agree with your latest doctor in the matter of resuming hormone replacement therapy. Taking HRT for prolonged period of time increases cardiovascular risks, raises the risk of an invasive breast cancer by 26 percent, and also has been shown to lead to Alzheimer's Disease. You can try natural means to improve your sexual function. Yoga, healthy foods including soy products, changing postures during sexual encounter to create a change, practicing relaxation techniques and getting a couple counselling session, are all going to help. Hope you find this information useful. Wish you good health.
