Hi,

Montgomery glands are sebaceous glands around nipple on the areola of breast. Its main purpose is to moisturize and lubricate the nipple. However, some times, these glands may be blocked due to presence of infection, if the bacteria get into the glands, these can be clogged and infection may be present. Other reasons for blockage of these glands may be breast cancer, diabetes etc.

Clogged, blocked or swollen Montgomery glands can be treated by simple home remedies like by soaking the area in warm, salty water or gentle warm soft cloth compresses. However, if these measures do not solve the problem, then you may need some antibiotic for treatment of any infection of the glands under guidance of your doctor.

If the swelling, soreness, pain and fever do not subside even after a course of antibiotics, then it is always advised to get yourself examined by your doctor, to rule out presence of areolar abscess or any other condition like breast cancer, diabetes etc., and if any such condition is present, then it should be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
