Can I Do Tonsillectomy When I Have Tonsilitis?

i had strep throat a few weeks ago (test came back positive) and now my throat is painful again so the doctor said the infection probably came back. so he gave me some stronger antibiotics then last time but its very weird because now one side of my tonsils is better and not painful anymore but the other tonsil, or jsut the other side of my throat since i cant see, hurts A LOT and i can barely open my mouth, its hard to eat (because i cant open wide to fit food into my mouth) and talk and it hurts a lot when i swallow. i also have noticed black strands in my throat mucus. im very worried now especially about the black strands, so i dont know what to do... also my doctor said i should seriously consider a tonsillectomy as i have gotten tonsilitis repeatedly over the past few months and its very annoying. but anyway im very scared.

Hi,

Noted your history related to inability to open the mouth fully, repeated tonsillitis, black strands with mucus and so on.
All your history is suggestive of a condition called peri-tonsillitis and should be cared by a Doctor.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult your ENT again.
If peri-tonsillitis is confirmed then you need to continue the antibiotics, metronidazole, anti-inflammatory and gargle.
Once the abscess is ripe your Doctor will open it.
Complete the curse.
And this is one of the indications of tonsillectomy later once the disease is under control for better output after surgery.
This may be after 6 weeks or so.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General and ENT Surgeon
