Brown Discharge During Pregnancy, Cervix Still Closed, Mild Cramping. Miscarriage?

I am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I had a very tiny amount of brown discharge for 2 days and then yesterday had a small amount of red blood. Since then I ve had some brown blood. Went to the doctor here in canada yesterday who did an exam and said my cervix was still closed. He took a blood test but I m still waiting for results. I did have some mild cramping as well. Does this sound like it is most likely a miscarriage?

Hallow Dear,

Brown discharge any time during the pregnancy is not a good sign. Brown discharge is either old blood or discharge of the decaying tissue. Hence, most of the time it indicates non-viable baby.

Closed cervix is no way an optimistic sign with brown discharge. It only suggests that the uterus has not yet started expelling the non-viable baby. When the baby is non-viable and still not getting aborted, the condition is called as Missed abortion.

The blood test on your blood will be mostly Beta hCG test which is a very sensitive test and will help you in clinching the diagnosis. If the test reveals non-viable foetus, please go for ultrasonography to find out whether any products of conception are still present in the uterine cavity or they have been expelled out.

If the baby is non-viable, please do not delay the termination of pregnancy lest the risk of complications like excessive bleeding due to DIC, infection, etc.. May be before terminating the pregnancy, you will be asked to undergo following special investigations (in addition to the routine ones):
* Bleeding time & Clotting time
* Platelet count
* Prothrombin time
* Fibrinogen degradation products

These investigations give some clue about DIC.

I feel, your doctor is thinking on the same line as what I am thinking. Please wait for the confirmation of diagnosis. If it is non-viable baby (missed abortion), get the pregnancy terminated ASAP.

I hope this helps you.
