Ultram is not strictly speaking a narcotic. It is an opiod agonist/antagonist which it turns on part of the opiate receptor and turns off others. It is marketed as non addictive and with less mood and cognitive altering impact than habit forming pain meds such as Percocet. Percocet contains acetaminophen, brand name tylenol, and the FDA has an alert out about meds with this combination. Be careful not to consume more than 2000 mg a day total of acetaminophen. Ultram is available plain, with tylenol or with aspirin.
I hope you fully recover. There is a topical anti-inflammatory called Voltaren. Its like Motrin or Aleve. It won't relive all your pain but may help you to decrease the amount you need.
Similarly Ultram may let you relegate Percocet for break through pain only, decreasing the likelihood of dependency. A small percentage of patients do find Ultram difficult to stop, though less commonly than Percocet users.
