Would Sodium Consumption Of More Than 3000mg A Day Cause Health Issues?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Feb 2016
Question: If you drink 2-3 cups of soup everyday with the sodium level of 1160mg each individual cup will this cause you health problems?
If yes, what are they and what would be your first sign of a problem?

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome back on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that the above amount of sodium (salt) is quite higher compared with the current recommendations for taking no more than 2300 mg daily.

In individuals older than 50 years, the upper recommended daily dose is around 1500 mg.

In fact the majority of screened people use around 3400 mg sodium daily, which is higher than the recommendations.

Having so much sodium chronically predisposes to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (myocardial infarction, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, heart failure deterioration, stroke, renal disease, etc).

These adverse effects are more frequent in individuals with chronic health disorders (chronic renal disease, heart failure, hypertension, etc).

First signs of excessive sodium intake may be related to hypertension consequences (headache, dizziness, shortness, doby weakness, etc)

Also, limbs edema may be a presenting sign.

Sometimes uncontrolled hypertention form excessive sodium intake may lead to neurological symptomatology (motor, sensory deficits, etc).

Other times, especially when acute sodium overload has occurred complaints like dizziness, muscle cramps, or electrolyte imbalance may be present.

Rarely, large amount of sodium has caused death.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of further uncertainties, do not hesitate to ask me again.

Wishing you the best for this New Year!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

My limbs have been very weak lately. I kneel down and I can't get up without help. I am a 62 yr old female with a elevation in Cholesterol but he said everything else was normal. I can't remember if I started this binge before or after my blood was drawn. I have had headaches lately also. I get exhausted easily. And this is all lately although I have been diagnosed with 2 herniated discs in my neck and being allergic to steroids prevents me from getting shots. But pain was not he issue that caused my doctor to order a neck mri it was numbness of my limbs for no apparent reason. So that is left untreated. Also all Cholesterol medications I have been put on shot my liver enzymes through the roof so it's been left untreated for 10 yrs now. Maybe more.
Thank you for your answer because I only noticed the sodium level in the cup of soup a couple of days ago. but I am a binge eater. And I like the noodles. I'll have to slow down or maybe move on to something else. I have never in my entire life been on a normal diet. why start now. Stationary is kept in my stove.
Thanks again

Brief Answer:
You are welcome!

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

I would explain that cholesterol may be effectively managed in several ways, even without medication. First, it is necessary just to avoid highly enriched fatty foods and increase your daily activity (walking for a while daily).

I believe that your pain and even limb numbness has nothing to do with your daily salt intake.

In fact, the only evident risk from taking a greater amount of sodium in your case is hypertension.

Just be more careful and consider checking you blood pressure values more frequently and enjoy your diet.

Hope to have been of help.

Regards,

Dr. Iliri

then my legs are either A. My Fibromyalgia or B. the 2 herniated discs in my neck

Brief Answer:
Opinion as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Coming to this point, a differential diagnosis should be done.

Herniated discs in your neck can't be the cause of your leg numbness, because the underlying nerve endings come from the upper limbs.
More lower backbone segments are rezponsible for legs inervation.

The following tests:

- backbone MRI
- nerve conduction study
- lower limbs Doppler ultrasound for exploring blood vessels

would be helpful to differentiate the exact responsible cause.

Fibromyalgia is a more sophisticated diagnosis and needs further investigation.

Greetings!

I've been diagnosed with fibromyagia since 1997 and have been on Neuronton and Fentynal since 1999.

Brief Answer:
Fibromyalgia could be a responsible cause.

Detailed Answer:

Hi again,

I would explain that Neurontin is perfect in case of neuropathic pain (in case the above recommended tests confirm that), but you should know that it is necessary to use the appropriate daily dose.

If the desired effect is not achieved, the dose should be increased gradually up to 1800 mg/day.

In case the above mentioned tests result normal, then fibromyalgia alternative would be the most probable responsible cause.

Coming to this point, one of the most preferred drugs would be Duloxetine (a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor).

Duloxetine is very effective also in neuropathic pain.

You need to discuss with your attending physician on the above mentioned options.

I hope our discussion has been of some help to you!

I remain at your disposal for any further questions.

why would you lead me to a link that I have to pay for the answers?

You have given me some advice that I am going to talk to my doctors about. I appreciate it. I was just trying to give you more information on this line. I already pay for getting unlimited answers on this website.
I wanted to give you a copy of my medical history along with my medications (ex. Neurontin 3600mgs/day.) I will close this correspondence if you would prefer that. Just let me know but you advice was sounding good enough that I made an apt with my Primary Care doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

The neurontin dose that you are taking seems to be a little high. I recommend discussing with your doctor on the possibility of switching to another drug like pregabaline or an antidepressant like duloxetine.

You can ask further follow ups if you need following this line! You can attach/upload your tests reports for me to review. I would be happy to answer to you!

I gave you my personal link, so in the future, when this answer will be closed by you, and you will have any other uncertainties, you can ask me directly (and not any other doctor) on my link if you wish so.

You should know that when you ask a question, not directed to any doctor, it will be answered usually by the first doctor who will be free at the moment.

While when asking direct questions, only the doctor you ask will answer.

Hope my answer was comprehensive and clear!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri
