What Does The Following Ultrasound Scan Report During Early Pregnancy Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: I thought I was 9 weeks pregnant. I went for an early ultrasound scan which says I am only 5.5 weeks. It is showing an irregular gestational sac with a yolk and embryo but no heartbeat. They are say scan could be too early. I am 41 and this is my first pregnancy.
Yesterday I went to the Early Pregnancy Unit as I started with light bleeding. They did an internal and it showed a closed cervix. I have an ultrasound scan scheduled for next Thursday. I have waited 5 years for this baby and I am so scared of miscarriage. Do you see I can have a pregnancy or do you see it ending in tears? I have never had any pregnancy symptoms other than missed period. Please help me

Brief Answer:
Features suggestive of miscarriage

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
Ultrasound showing decreased size of gestational sac, irregular gestational sac, non presence of cardiac activity and bleeding in early pregnancy are suggestive of miscarriage.
It is definitely a great loss, but these findings are confirmatory of miscarriage.
I will suggest you to get a repeat scan after a week and if the findings are same, then termination of pregnancy is advisable.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Brief Answer:
Repeat scan required

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,

The viability of the pregnancy needs to be confirmed by a repeat scan after 7 days of the original scan. Then only the confirmed diagnosis can be made.
