Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Please help I usually have a regular 27 day cycle but this month I am on day 39 and still no sign of a period. Pregnancy test by urine is negative. I have a cycle about one every 18 months that is about 35 days cycle but I have never had this 39 days and still no bleeding. I am currently trying to get pregnant but I don't want to get to hopeful as I have been trying for 2 years. Do you think I do have a chance of pregnancy or not?

Many thanks for a quick response

Brief Answer:
Do a blood pregnancy test

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Occasionally a menstrual cycle can get delayed and this is normal.
Since you have not had a delayed period of this duration before there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Urine Pregnancy test done in the right way should have shown the presence of pregnancy by now. Sometimes the sensitivity of these kits vary. So I suggest you to do blood pregnancy test which is more sensitive and accurate. This will clarify the things for you.
Good luck.

Brief Answer:
Do the blood pregnancy test.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I empathize with you. I appreciate the amount of anxiety you are going through.

I cannot say that you have a good chance of pregnancy as your home pregnancy tests are negative.

But there is a possibility of pregnancy.
At this point of time it is crucial to do blood pregnancy test to know the fact.

I once again wish you good luck.

I have been to the doctors he says it can take up to 6 weeks for a positive urine test from my last period. He will do a blood test when that time has lapsed and in the meantime with my age being 39 he has referred me to a Fertility Specialist.

Will a fertility specialist investigate me as my husband doesn't want a semen analysis done. What tests will they do please?

Many thanks

Brief Answer:
Yes. Postcoital test instead of semen analysis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
In my clinic I would have done the blood pregnancy test now. It is a sensitive test. In your case it would have helped you to take next step.

It is good that he referred you to a fertility specialist. I don't see any reason for them to refuse to investigate you.

They will do hormone tests ( FSH, LH, Serum progesterone, Thyroid function tests) and fallopian tube patency test and a baseline pelvic ultrasound to assess your uterus and ovaries. If your husband does not want to do semen analysis discuss with your doctor about postcoital test. In this test your husband and you need to have normal intercourse without lubricants. You will be asked to come to the hospital within 24 hours of intercourse. Sample of cervical ( neck of the womb) mucus is taken and examined under microscope. One can see the sperms, their number and whether they are dead or alive. This is a good alternative test for semen analysis. Based on the results of investigations treatment will be planned.

Take one tablet of folic acid daily.
To increase your chances of conception you both should maintain normal BMI, quit smoking ( if smoking), cut down on alcohol and have intercourse at least three times in a week.
