What Does A TSH Level Of 7.44 Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: I had TSH level of 7.44, and told normal was around 4.5 or so. Doc put me on livothyroxine 2 months ago. New test says 1.6. Nurse says this is good, normal. I still feel very tired and sometimes slightly "spacey" and just "out of it" and semi-depressed at times. Maybe thyroid is not whole problem? Need advice.

Brief Answer:
screen for anemia

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If the TSH level is now within normal range, this may indicate that there may be other factors involved in your symptoms.

Anemia or low blood count can also cause fatigue , this should be ruled out with a complete blood count.
Chronic liver or kidney disease or uncontrolled illness can also cause fatigue

If all of your other bloods are normal then another cause would need to be found.

Depression, on its own can cause fatigue and the 'spacey' sensation that you mentioned.
It can also cause some or all of the following- can affect interest in normal activities.
There are screening questionnaires that your doctor can apply to check for depression. If present, treatment would involve counselling and possibly medication.

Consider: (1) having the complete blood count, if not previously done along with other routine bloods to assess liver and kidney function
(2)screening for depression

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you!
ALso wondering:
Do you think I might have a problem with adrenal fatigue or adrenal gland or cortisol production? They seem to be related too, from what I have read.

Brief Answer:
consider adrenal insufficiency, adrenal fatigue not presently a diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
HI

Adrenal insufficiency /addisons disease , is a possible cause though it is rare. It is estimated that it occurs in 40 to 60 persons per 1 million people.
This can also be assessed by testing eg the rapid ACTH stimulation tests

In this test, blood is taken to measure cortisol and other hormones then you would be given a hormone called ACTH (normally stimulates release of cortisol).
Blood is then taken after 30 to 60 mins to check cortisol again to see if there are any changes.

At the moment adrenal fatigue is not considered a medical condition that has been proven to exist so this would not assessed.

Please feel free to ask anything else
