What Causes Vomiting And Profuse Sweating While On Ribavirin And Sovaldi?

Question: Hi, I've been taking Ribivirin and Sovaldi for 2 1/2 weeks and started vomiting, sweating profusely, and trouble getting my breath with chest pain. This is for Hep c genotype 3. I'm 66 years old, female. I was told to stop taking it until today and to restart it. This all happened last Thursday and I was horribly sick until today. I'm scared to start it up again and my dr is on vacation. I can't get any help but the medical assistant told me that once I stop, I can't go back on it. I'm scared to resume the medication until he comes back in two weeks. My husband died from Ribavirin and interferon so you can understand my fears. I don't know what to do.

Brief Answer:
You can wait to restart the medicine if it is that intolerable

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through. Based on the history you have shared, relating to your husband, it might be some concomitant disease process which has caused fatal outcomes because in checked and monitored circumstances it is less likely to cause such outcomes as drug therapy is for cure and not to cause such grave side effects. I can understand your concerns and I know it is difficult for some individuals to tolerate the drug. Since you have already stoped taking it so I would suggest you to get your baseline tests like complete blood count, alongwith liver and renal functions tests as well as serum electrolytes done to look for any fluctuating levels. Meanwhile if any grave abnormality in these tests doesn't come up and your prescribing physician comes up, you can wait to restart it. If it flares up your physician then most respectfully I beg to differ as he should be the one to remove such fears off your mind in first place and advise a complete management plan before leaving for vacations as side effects which such therapy are quite prevalent and should be tackled accordingly. Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
