What Causes Tingling And Numbness In Index And Middle Finger?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Feb 2015
Question: I went to my doctor with just the right index and middle finger tingling and numb. He gave me Neurotin and a blood pressure pill that was a dietretic. In less than a week, my hands and feet both were burning and tingling. I changed doctors, and he did blood tests on about everything including a glucose test (not fasting). The only thing was a 4.5 thyroid. Two weeks later, I had to go to the emegrency room because it was like someone turned on a light switch in my entire body. The blood test showed 30 potassium. I had potassium pills, and I now take thyroid supplements and foods to replace the low potassium. Right now, 500 mg tylenol helps with the fingers and toes pain, and benydryl is the only thing that helps with the burning (Witch XXXXXXX and Aspercream). When I start to tickle, I do stretching excercises and that helps. When we were on a cruise, the temperature outside was 85 degrees, and I didn't sweat or shine on my skin. I do P90 Excercise with gloves and coats on to sweat, and then take a cool shower. This somewhat helps. I have an appointment with a neurologist Feb. 2. My wife is a dietician, and thought maybe I had systemic inflammation ( a bowel movement helps relieve the symptoms). I'm not sure this is a nervous disorder, but possibly blood or muscle. I'm certain it was a reaction to the Neurotin and blood pressure pills.

Brief Answer:
Neuropathy symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your symptoms.
I presume that diuretic which was given for high blood pressure caused low potassium. Burning and tingling in hands are probably due to nerve involvement. It could be at wrist level or at spine level. Neurontin helps with nerve pain. However, I agree that, the symptoms of flushing which you had probably was caused by Neurontin itself.

You seems to have a subclinical hypothyroidism with TSH of 4.5. I wouldn't give you levothyroxine for that now, but rather recheck TSH and Free T4 after 2-3 months. You may take a diet rich in Iodine.

To determine the cause of the tingling and numbness, you may need tests like NCV ( nerve conduction velocity) which has to be done after consulting a neurologist. Till then, you may use Tylenol or Tramadol ( in small dose)

I don't know what you think, but my bowel movements aren't floating. When I press something into my hands, the impression stays there for a while. My scales is suppose to measure % of fat, but I was wondering if all this messed up my fat absorbtion. I'm not trying to put words into your mouth, so what do you think, and is there a test for that that I can do that I don't have to pay a doctor. Also, when I go out into the cold without gloves my hands feel better, but when I return to the warm (while warming up) i'm pretty well numb in my exposed areas for about 10 minutes, and my body temperature drops below 97..2. When I workout aerobically, my pulse does go up properly, but my body temperature only goes to 98.2. My resting temp. is 97.6.

Thank you for the reply. From your description, it seems that you have swelling ( edema) in your hands. We need to find the reason for it.

The cold and numb symptoms in your hands are very unique. Usually the numbness in hand become worse on cold exposure. However, in your case, cold weather seems to improve it and warm areas seems to worsen it. Bowel symptoms which you explained can occur in hypothyroidism. However, your TSH was not that high to cause these symptoms.

Few tests you may do with out visiting a doctor are, a Free T4 and repeat TSH, Electrolytes, a blood sugar, Urine protein, Serum calcium and albumin, serum Creatinine and a liver function test. These are few tests to determine the cause of your symptoms. However when you see neurologist on Feb 2nd he may also order some of these tests + an NCV ( Nerve test)
