default
Posted on Tue, 18 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,

I am XXXX. We have a son who is 2.4 years now.
My wife (32 years old) is pregnant for the second time.
During blood test on 6th week of pregnancy ( last menstrual period : 9-June-2015),
it was found that TSH level was 6.95. Our Gynecologist suggested that this is high
and my wife is currently taking medications for thyroid as prescribed by Doctor.

Few queries in our mind:
1. What is the reason for sudden raise in thyroid level.
2. What should be the normal thyroid level range for a pregnant women
3. Will this have any impact on the baby's growth
4. What foods to take and what food to be avoided
5. Should the thyroid tablets be taken till delivery time or post delivery as well
6. By changing food habits , can we bring the thyroid level to normal.

Thank You,

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
If thyroid levels normalize then nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir, thanks for trusting health care magic.
I understand your anxiety related to the issue.
Hypothyroidism is very easy to manage and if patient takes the medicine regularly then there occurs no much problem in pregnancy because of the hypothyroid status.
It is common to have raised thyroid levels in pregnancy because of cross reaction pregnancy hormone with thyroid hormone levels.
Normal thyroid levels in early pregnancy till 14 weeks is 2.5 IU and after that 3 IU.
If controlled then no impact on baby but in case it stays uncontrolled due to non compliance then it can lead to abortion and preterm birth, growth retarded or mentally retarded baby and even abruptio placentae and thus severe bleeding per vaginum.
But dont get scared as these side effects are seen in patients with uncontrolled thyroid levels.
No food items have any role in thyroid disease.
Thyroid tablets need to be taken daily till delivery and then till 6 weeks post delivery and then asked for a repeat thyroid test which decides further hormone intake.
So all in all dont worry and just ask her to take her tablets daily. Regards
Dr Manisha
