What Causes Pain On Left Side Of Pelvic Bone Post Hernia Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Feb 2015
Question: Dec 12, 2014, I had a total hysterectomy. Returned Dec 17 due to a hernia. Surgery completed without a mesh with a stronger thread and tighter stitches. XXXXXXX 1 2015, I began having pain on my left side. Pelvic bone was sensitive to touch and I began have sharp pain in the left groin area. XXXXXXX 2, woke up from the pain in left groin area and the pain traveled to my lower back. XXXXXXX 3, pain was in behind my knee and it felt like I was being stabbed with a needle. I have MS and currently take Tecfidera twice a day. I exercised 3-4 times a week, weigh 134 and eat a healthy diet. I have been taking my pain medication but it does not seem effective. My question: Is this experience normal in the healing process for these surgeries? What else should I expect during the next several weeks?

Brief Answer:
Can be du to epidural anaesthesia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain that you are having can be due to the effect of the epidural anaesthesia given during the surgery or due to a mild disc prolapse causing a nerve root compression.
It can happen due to a nerve injury or extreme stretching after the procedure. Most of the times this pain subsides within six months of the surgery without any treatment.

I would suggest that at this time, you consider seeing a spinal specialist and see if with an MRI or CT they can determine any specific pathology of spine causing the pain.
It might be related to scarring, otherwise termed adhesions, of the dura mater of the spinal cord, or leaking of cerebrospinal fluid at the site of the epidural into the epidural space if it goes in too deep.
The pain can be relieved by doing a hot fomentation and applying a local analgesic gel. Stronger prescription drugs like muscle relaxants or gabapentin might be needed in persistent pain.
In next few weeks there can be tingling or numbness in the different areas which is suggestive of gradual healing.
I hope this answers your query.
