What Causes Hot Flashes, nigh Sweats And Weight Gain While On Estrogel?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Jul 2014
Question: I had a total hysterectomy in September 2012. I have been on Estrogel since. The last month or so I have been having hot flashes, night sweats, have gained 10 lbs (no reason for it) and extremely tired...does not matter how much sleep I get. My OBGYN did a blood test and said no thyroid or hormone issues. What do I do now? I 42 years old.

Brief Answer:
PLEASE PROVIDE DETAILS AS REQUESTED.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Since Estrogel worked fine for you, I can see no reason why the symptoms should get so bothersome again.
Is the thyroid test normal ?
Have you got your calcium and vitamin D levels measured, if not , please do so.
At times, you might need more hormones apart from the Estrogel.
How long did you take EEMT before deciding that it was not working, because you should give it 2 - 3 weeks to take effect.
ALso, what is your current weight and height ?
An active lifestyle, and sensible eating goes a long way, as does yoga / relaxation towards ameliorating menopausal symptoms.
All the best

I am 5'5" and weigh 150 lbs. My normal weight has been around 140 lbs. I gained this weight "overnight". I do not eat very many sweets at all. I am a chicken, steak, fish, veggies and salad type of person. I will eat pizza (a few pieces at best) and a sandwich here and there (wheat bread). My eating habits are not bad at all. My OBGYN said my blood tests were fine, thyroid included. I know he tested for thyroid, hormone and I believe a complete CBC. I do not know if he tested for vitamin levels. I took the EEMT for 3 weeks. I felt like it was causing me to gain even more weight and it really was not helping my symptoms. I have been on the Estrogel since September of 2012 with no problems which is why this concerns me. I hate having hot flashes and night sweats but the fatigue/exhaustion is what is bothering me the most. I will be going to get a Calcium supplement with Vitamin D tomorrow to see if that helps.

Brief Answer:
CAN ADD ANTIDEPRESSANTS.

Detailed Answer:
HI,
Maybe you require a change in the dosage of hormones.
At times, factors like stress, sleep deprivation , travelling etc, can also exacerbate these symptoms.
Get the calcium and vitamin D .
At times, antidepressants maybe added for a short while too.
At the end of the day, it is just a phase.
Just hang on, and it will pass.
Take care.
