What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding During Menopause?

Question: I am a 48 year old female. Had FSH test 4 years ago and confirmed menopause. Haven't had a period since. Just the other day I began having heavy vaginal bleeding along with lower back pain. I have had small cycts on my ovaries years ago but were more like small sacs. I haven't had any for 4 years. I also was put on Metformin 4 years ago because my A1C was borderline and began to have vaginal bleeding. Because they had no explanation for this I endured an endometrial biopsy that was negative. I went off the metformin and nothing since.

such vaginal bleeding is common once in a while due to hormonal variations caused by surge and withdrawal of progesterone hormones.

If you have got local examination of cervix, pap smear done along with Endometrial biopsy, there is nothing to worry about it.

My gynecologist explaned at my appt that vaginal bleeding after menopause is not normal and a reason needs to be explored. I am scheduled for an ultrasound and another endometrial biopsy. Last one was 3 years ago .

Thanks for clarification about not taking HRT.

In such circumstances this needs to be evaluated further. I suggest you get an ultrasound scan done to identify if any abnormalities exist.

Further it is advisable to undergo Hysteroscopy guided Endometrial biopsy which is better method see visually if there is any abnormal area in the Endometrium than undergoing blind Endometrial biopsy again.
