What Causes Difficulty In Passing Urine And Burning Urination Post Catheterization?

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Oct 2014
Question: I am a 47 year old male and was having trouble with a burning sensation under the tip of my penis when urinating. I had bloodwork done and there was no std's but I had recently had knee surgery where a catheter was used. The urologist said it could have been a uti . They gave me Cipro for 7 days and things seemed better. They said my bladder did not seem to be emptying all the way though and did a cystoscope. It hurt like hell! Since then I have had some slow urination with a weak stream and the burning sensation is starting again as well as having trouble maintaining an erection. Not quite sure what to think as the urologist does not seem concerned about this but I am. Anything would be helpful.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to Urethritis or Stricture Uerthra

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have difficulty in passing urine and burning urination post catheterization during knee surgery.

This could be mostly either due to Urethritis resulting out of foreign body reaction to catheter or due to narrowing of urethra (Stricture urethra)

Please get your routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexine and urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin along with anti inflammatory medications like Diclofenac twice daily Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water. To keep your urine dilute This will help to control dysuria.

If problem persists after 1o days of taking these medications you may need to get Retrograde Cystourethrogram done to rule out possibility of stricture urethra.

If turns out to be positive you may need to go for endoscopic Incision of Uretheral stricture (VIU)

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to write if you have more questions I shall be happy to help you .
Thanks and Regards .
