Cipro

What is Cipro?

Ciprofloxacin (INN) is an antibiotic that can treat a number of bacterial infections. It is a second-generation fluoroquinolone. Its spectrum of activity includes most strains of bacterial pathogens responsible for respiratory, urinary tract, gastrointestinal, and abdominal infections, including Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, Moraxella catarrhalis, Proteus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and Gram-positive (methicillin-sensitive, but not methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes) bacterial pathogens. Ciprofloxacin and other fluoroquinolones are valued for this broad spectrum of activity, excellent tissue penetration, and for their availability in both oral and intravenous formulations.

Ciprofloxacin is used alone or in combination with other antibacterial drugs in the empiric treatment of infections for which the bacterial pathogen has not been identified, including urinary tract infections and abdominal infections among others. It can also treat infections caused by specific pathogens known to be sensitive.

Ciprofloxacin is the most widely used of the second-generation quinolone antibiotics that came into clinical use in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 2010, over 20 million outpatient prescriptions were written for ciprofloxacin, making it the 35th-most commonly prescribed drug, and the 5th-most commonly prescribed antibacterial, in the US. Ciprofloxacin was discovered and developed by Bayer A.G. and subsequently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1987. Ciprofloxacin has 12 FDA-approved human uses and other veterinary uses, but it is often used for unapproved uses (off-label).

Overall, the safety of ciprofloxacin and other fluoroquinolones appears to be similar to that of other antibiotics, but serious side effects occur on occasion. Some disagreement in the literature exists regarding whether fluoroquinolones produce serious adverse events at a higher rate than other broad-spectrum antibiotics. The U.S. FDA-approved label for ciprofloxacin includes a "black box" warning of increased risk of tendon damage and/or rupture and for exacerbation of muscle weakness in patients with the neurological disorder myasthenia gravis. Other side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness.

Hi,
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis attck about a month ago. Abdominal pains on left side, low grade fever. put on cipro and flagyl, and pains went away after a day or two. Stomach has not been the same since...Lotys of bloating and distention, fullness, but other than that felt OK. This past weekend, i started having on and off low grade fever high 99's to 100, and chills, and overall feeling unwell. Took ibruprofin. After 3 days, i do feel better today. Yesterday, when i went to the bathroom, there was a bit of blood, haven't gone since. I do also have hemmoroids, and not sure if if was a flare up due to stomach issues last few weeks. I have not had any abdominal pain, so i am wondering if this can be a flare-up of the divert, and does the pain usually follow the fever, chills, etc...Should i go back on antibiotic to fend off any looking infection?

Thanks

Severe cough may cause stretch to lower back muscle.that we call muscle strain because of excessive bouts of cough that require muscle action.this will slowly go away . You need to avoid excessive forward bending and twisting and jerky movements. You can take some pain killers if pain is severe...

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The urinary tract infection is managed by appropriate antibiotic (preferably that selected by drug sensitivity), plenty of fluids, and pain killer for the pain.

Hi, my husband (64yrs) had what appeared to be an infection rapidly ascending up his eustachian tube 2 1/2 weeks ago with muffled hearing. He was prescribed Amoxicillin. After the course of antibiotics, he improved a bit and then almost immediately ear pain returned. he saw his GP who noted debris blocking the view of his eardrum. The GP syringed the ear resulting in a diffuese and excruciatingly painful otitis externa. his ear can almost swelled shut. he was precribed Cipro HC drops and told to take NSAIDs (he declined to take Hydrocodone). Now 4 days into treatment with the drops the ear canal is responding and no longer intensely painful but his neck, jaw and temple are sensitive to touch. Hearing which cleared after the syringing event (when white cheeselike material/debris were removed) quickly became muffled again and feels like debris or fluid may be causing it. The pain is mostly gone but the Cipro now causes intense itching. He is afraid of returning to the GP as he does not want the ear syringed again fearing a recurrence of the OE. The blood vessels in the affected temple feel quite painful to touch now too. Is thismlikely to resovlve with current treatment and hearing return or should he see an ENT specialist for removal of more debris? This is the first time he has experienced an event like this. There is no apparent cellulitis surrounding the affected ear.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. You need to get a his ear cleaned again to rule out a fungal infection (in addition to a bacterial infection) since there is a cheesy white discharge and intense itching. The better the cleaning, the faster will be the recovery.

2. The neck, jaw and temple pain is...
