Brief Answer: Detailed answer below. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome, I understand the issue. These symptoms are very common after the age of 45 so do not worry so much. The commonest cause is hormonal imbalances and mostly fluctuations of estrogen disrupting cycles. Other reasons for this may be ovarian tumors that cause imbalance in hormones and thyroid disturbances. Polyps of the cervix and endometrium and fibroids [ non cancerous uterine tumors ] also produce irregular bleeding. Very rare causes are cancer cervix [ usually has a foul smelling discharge] and cancer uterus. These are rare and mostly occur after 55-60 years. You are having mild bleeding now even after about 7-8 days. As of now i suggest that you may take tablets like tranexamic acid to control bleeding. See your doctor get an examination and ultrasound as well as thyroid testing done. Further evaluation may need a D and C or a hysteroscopy if a cause is found in the preliminary screen. Please do not worry as these irregularities are a rule rather than exception after 45 years of age. Many women do experience some or the other issues and the causes are simple. Just get a vaginal examination [ to rule out local causes like cervical polyps] and an ultrasound and it will clarify things. Hope this was helpful. Feel free to ask any further queries and I will be happy to help. Thanks for using HCM. Have a good day. Dr Nilajkumar Bagde Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology

Brief Answer: Can take drug, it's over the counter as per my inf Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome, Without the medication it is not possible to say how long the bleeding will go on. Ultrasound does not have anything to do with bleeding. It can be done even when there is active bleeding. There is no need to see a doctor before taking this drug as such. If you get an early appointment and the bleeding is slight, then you may see the doctor first and then take the drug as per the doctors advice. If the bleeding is heavy you may take 2-3 doses if there is some time until when you can see your doctor. It will help in tiding over the time period and decrease amount of bleed. Tranexamic acid is available over the counter. It is not to be used for prolonged duration, so use it for 3-4 days twice a day one tablet of 500 or 650 mg every 12 hours until you see your doctor. The bleeding may recur on stopping the medicine as this is a bit unpredictable. If you have history of blood clots in the past do not use this drug. Also do not take it if you are using birth control pills. This drug increases clotting of blood and hence decreases the bleeding. Short term use is not associated with much side effects. I hope that this answered your query. Please feel free for any further queries. Take care. Dr Nilajkumar
